A day before the release of 'Padmaavat', protests against the film intensified across several states, with members of several fringe outfits taking out rallies, blocking roads and damaging vehicles.

Here are the top developments of the day:

1. 30 students, three teachers, and a caretaker of GD Goenka World School, Sohna Road, came under attack from an unruly mob of around 50 people in Bhondsi. The mob, protesting the release of 'Padmaavat', pelted the school bus with stones and broke its windows, even as the occupants took shelter under the seats. No injuries were reported.

2. The Rajput Karni Sena gave a call for a 'janta curfew' on January 25 - the day of the film's release - to prevent people from watching 'Padmaavat'. The group's chief Lokendra Singh Kalvi said a 'janta curfew' on cinema halls would mean that the public will stop the film from being exhibited.

"We are adamant on our stand that this film should be banned. There should be a self-imposed curfew by people," he said.

Later in the day, Kalvi called the violent protests "sad," even as he added that nobody could stop the people's anger from boiling over.

"Whatever is happening is sad, it is wrong. But now nobody can stop this fire burning inside of us, and from spilling onto the streets. Not even me," ANI quoted him as saying.

3. The Multiplex Association of India announced that its members will not screen the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-helmed film in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa. The association represents around 75 per cent of multiplex owners in India, and its members together account for 1,800- 2,000 screens accross the country.

"For us safety of patrons is important. Depending on the scenario, we will see if the atmosphere is safe, then we will play it (in these four states). Things could change (but) at the moment we are looking at safety of people," the association's president Deepak Asher said.

Even in states where the film will be released, private security guards will be deployed outside cinema halls besides the police.

4. In Uttar Pradesh, an outfit called the Kanpur Kshatriya Mahasabha announced a cash reward for anyone who chops off lead actor Deepika Padukone's nose, reported PTI.

"We have collected crores of rupees from Kanpurites to be given as reward to anyone who will bring the chopped nose of Deepika Padukone," its president Gajendra Singh Rajawat said.

5. Several protesters were arrested and detained around India, including 20 persons in Gurugram for violating prohibitory orders, 48 in Ahmedabad for indulging in violent acts, and more than 35 in Mumbai.

6. 'Padmaavat' found support in West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee who said she will be happy if the film is screened in the state as the Supreme Court order must be respected, reported PTI.

"It is a film. The name of the film has also been changed. The states where trouble broke out are ruled by BJP," PTI quoted her as saying.

7. Several fringe groups oppose the film, alleging that 'Padmaavat' distorts history and shows the Rajput community in bad light.

8. The Supreme Court will on January 29 hear a plea by lawyer ML Sharma seeking the deletion of some scenes in the film, reported IANS.
