Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung

Vietnam's Communist Party has apologised to the public for its "mistakes", while making a veiled jab at the nation's prime minister, Nguyen Tan Dung.

Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong made the comments in a speech broadcast by state media at the end of a two-week meeting assessing the party's performance.

Public dissatisfaction has been high in Vietnam following a series of corruption scandals contributing to slowing economic growth. Many citizens have taken to the internet to express their frustration with events but authorities have tried to crack down on the discussion.

Mr Nguyen openly acknowledged the government's shortcomings on Monday, however, saying the key decision-making body, the politburo, had "seriously criticised themselves and honestly admitted their mistakes."

But he said the central committee had decided not to impose disciplinary measures "for the whole politburo and a member of the politburo". It had instead urged the group to "fix the mistakes, so that hostile forces could not distort the situation".

Reports say one party official has expressed dissatisfaction that the committee had not further rebuked senior figures over corruption. "As in the past, the leaders of the Vietnam Communist Party want to wash themselves only to the shoulders, but not to the hair," he said.

The official added people would be "once again largely disappointed" by the party leadership.

So a first step is done.

You think so? I think it's just a political struggle between Trương Tấn Sang and Nguyen Tan Dung and eventually there will be a shake up within the party. The party, with the military, still have a very strong grip on Vietnam. An apology by Nguyen Phu Trong doesn't mean much since he's not the one in real power.

Do not presume that whatever China does, the rest of Asia will follow. Viet Nam will be a multi-party politics and reasonably democratic country in our lifetime. Hồ Chí Minh City will revert to Sài Gòn, just as how the Russians have done for their cities.

You're the one who's bringing China in and while we're at it there's no doubt the VCP is following the CPC mode. It's their interests to do so and as long as the economy is doing good their grip will be tight.

I'm not sure breaking up the party structure at this moment is in the best interest of Vietnam. Too sudden a change to democracy in a place where democracy is not a familiarity is always not in the best interest of a country.

@ big daddy [now why did you choose that pseudoname?]

but the latest theme is to blame china for everything -- -we have to wait to blame them for the common cold now -- it started in ancient china because they did not have enough blankets and did not use scarfs made of wool etc. etc. -------news by ddc (dumb dodo corp.), lnc (liars news network) ...

When I went to school, they teached me "The Party is always right!".
They meant the Communist Party was like God, similar to the Pope in the Catholic church.

What happened?

If you haven´t noticed. Many Vietnamese see the current government as too soft and too friendly towards China. If there is a change on the top, a more aggressive move is expected.

Same with the west, and america in particular, who tell you “democracy is the BEST。

Democracy is no longer an Idea。It is THE Ideology。

It is the absolute truth and REALITY。

It must be accepted by all, even though democracy is one of the 3 or 4 BAD political systems according to Kant, the mother of freedom and democracy.:shout:

Democracy is a political structure within which people have very little freedom but lots of rights.

And rights exercised in violation of, or in contradiction to, other's rights.

They are BAD rights which a free market can never right.

Vietnam government are to soft when dealing with corrupted politicians, the people will support strong government, not the weak ones. It something China don't want to happen in Vietnam.

VCP does not have to follow CPC foot steps to accomplish her gold.

You're right Vietnam only needed one part, but strong, uncorrupt government, democracy can start at the lower level government position, then slowly moving upward

1) Why not? You have a good model in CPC that shows it works in building up the economy and the fundamental strength of a society. Just because you want to act independent do not mean you have to reinvent the wheel.

2) I totally agree corruptions at the very top of a government is the biggest show stopper for a nation to move forward. Western style democracy doesn't work in an eastern society unless you already have strong cohesive private sectors in term of economy and social fabric. As in the past and the intermediate future eastern countries must have strong paternal central governments to guide their respective societies to each of their own form of 'democracy' that suit them the best in accordance to their own needs and cultures. Blindly follows the western democracy without a strong foundation now is asking for troubles that'll stagnate a nation for a long time to come, eg: the Philippines.

@ Viet

The VCP should be glad to operate under the shadow of CPC, for without that bigger shadow, the VCP would be under the constant scrutiny by the self dignified west that'll lead to all kinds of actions and verbal attacks from every direction. You know as well as I do their election politics are as dirty as they come. and to prove that we don't need look further than what's Obama/Romney shamelessly operations on China these few months.
