Vietnam to build a high-speed train system | VOV Online Newspaper
(VOV) - Vietnam plans to build a new high speed railway, with trains that would speed from Hanoi to HCM City in just a few hours.


At the moment, it takes more than one day to commute between the two cities and the route requires changes.

The Prime Minister has just approved the strategy for modernising the north-south railway to link with major seaports and industrial zones increasing speeds to 80-90km/h for passenger trains and 50-60km/h for freighters by 2020.

In the 10 years following speeds will be further increased from 160km/h-200km/h and even to 350km/h in the years beyond that.

It'll be a while before you can take the train to most major cities but in the long term the plan might clear up Vietnam’s roads and skies, reducing both pollution and traffic congestion in one fell swoop.

With such a far-reaching plan experts suggest that with the increased speeds and savings it will just make more sense to take the train instead of flying or driving.

In the future they predict more than 30% of travel between Hanoi and HCM City will be by high speed rail.

we need money more than luck. the japanese demanded some $60b with the last proposal, which was rejected by the vietnamese assembly. japan mistakenly thought vietnam was a rich country :disagree:

vietnam should wait a few years. its economy is in trouble. the dong is falling. the country is running big deficit already, a high speed rail now will bankrupt the country.

no worry, HSR comes in next decde. as for our economy, with some percentage points ups and downs, VND-USD exchange rate has been stable since years. inflation falls to 0.

Why the VCP not use ODA from Japan like every other major infrastructure projects in the past? That should solve your lack of funds issue.

You are extremely unclear. Can you clarify? What speeds are proposed for the HSR?

Its gotten better now. VN had a trade surplus but due to high import of machinery and resources for manufacturing it lead to higher trade deficit. Inflation is low and the privatization of SOE should help. As long as their proper macroeconomic policies in place it can be manageable.

should vietnam still be China‘s little brother as it was 50 years ago, very probably vietnam will be given a high speed rail line for free. i was shocked when i read the amount of money and materials china gave to vietnam back then,considering how poor and backward china was at the time.

I traveled from Hanoi to Natrang to Nha Trang in 2012. My original plan was taking this reunification express(correct name?) directly to Saigon. The train conductor could speak a little English and we discussed a lot about Vietnam's railway system. But at last I couldn't stand the train's incommodity and shakiness and I took off in Nha Trang.

The ticket price for hard bed in 2012 from Hanoi to Saigon was around 350RMB( i remembered it was around 50-60 US dollar) for nearly 1700km in 35 hours. I was a little surprised at that time in Ga Hanoi cause I thought it would be much cheaper than China. (the same distance in China in 2015 needs 350 RMB for slow overnight train about 18-22 hours ). The same surprise came when i ordered beef pho which has a similar price as ours in 2012.

Do you have any plan to cut down prices of these slow trains and some sort of acceleration plan or upgrading the original line to standard gauge?

I think you should chose China for this project. The price will half. China can also provide the funding. It will be in your national interests. Would help economy.

They may accept the prices but can they afford subsequent investments, like cars and repairs? Deeply doubted.
