Love hotels have been popular in Japan for decades. And Chinese entrepreneurs have spotted an opportunity in the country’s changing sexual attitudes. Love hotels can now be seen in many big cities across China.
At 9 a.m. on the fifth day of the Spring Festival holidays, queues formed at the reception at a Tian E Lian Love Hotel, where young couples can choose from 27 love-themed rooms.
The decoration of the rooms is a key feature that sets this kind of hotel apart. There are various themes. But they mainly consist of fantasy interiors, decorated in bright colors and are dimly lit to create a romantic atmosphere. A circular mattress and Jacuzzi are standard. Some also provide a selection of whips and other sex toys.
The phenomenon of love hotels began in Japan decades ago. Now it is quickly spreading in China. About 500 have sprung up across the country. The Tian E Lian chain hopes to build an empire of 100 in five years.
With society opening up, attitudes to sex are changing rapidly in China. Today, Chinese people get married later, lose their virginity earlier and have more affairs. Entrepreneurs believe the future is bright for China’s sex-related industry.
