US worried over Pak perception of India's role in Afghanistan

Pakistan's negative perception of India's [ Images ] role in Afghanistan is a matter of "continuing concern," a Pentagon [ Images ] official has said, while appreciating the development assistance being offered by New Delhi [ Images ] to the war-torn country. The comments came as Pentagon released a report on Afghanistan where US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces are battling the Taliban [ Images ] amid efforts to rebuild the infrastructure torn down by years of war.

"We value very highly the developmental work that India's doing in Afghanistan. It's been a key, one of the major contributors, and the kind of developmental work that India has done in Afghanistan is really vital to the success of the effort there," the senior Defence Department official said. "At the same time, Pakistani perceptions of that--and they're regularly voiced, both in formal and informal conversations by a wide range of people in Pakistan--is an area that is a continuing concern," the official said after the release of the Pentagon report.

The report said that India's presence in Afghanistan cannot be understood without considering the "tense, fragile" relationship between Pakistan and India. The report cites President Hamid Karzai's [ Images ] visit to India in April this year in the beginning of the document's reporting period. It says the visit was seen as successful from both sides, with India reaffirming its commitment to Afghanistan as a reliable partner. It cites India's assistance in agriculture, its increased offers of degree scholarships and training programmes for the Afghans, as also the work on the Sal-ma hydroelectric dam in Herat Province. "India continues to be one of Afghanistan's largest assistance donors, providing 1.3 billion US $ in funding for major infrastructure projects like power transmission, power lines, roads, etc," it said. But, at the same time Pakistan's perceptions of India's role also need to be taken into account, the official said.

Pakistan has several times raised concerns over India's role in Afghanistan, particularly its consulates in Kandahar and Jalalabad but India has maintained that its involvement in the country is for development purposes. "Certainly the perceptions of Pakistan are important as well as the perceptions of India. "And so that's what we're saying, that it has to be looked at in context, without trying to be judgemental that one side or the other's perceptions are wrong, but it's important to be aware of those perceptions," the Defense Department official said in response to a question.

pakistan has always treated afghanistan as its "backyard". afghanistan gives it much needed stratic reach and depth. i think india is making in roads into the "backyard" and definitly the pakistanis are not liking it. they are getting squeezed (read presure) from both eastern and western borders.

the functions of indian consulates may be controversial according to pakistanis but i think afghanistan has given india a strategic foothold which will be helpful to india.

Achi baat hain... This opens up new theatres if you get my drift... Bohat achi baat hain.

US should be worried about ISI moles duping them and extracting confidential information with extreme low tech tactics!

Any negative influence in Afghanistan is our death spell..therefore its either us or nobody. Afghanistan will never stabilize without subsequent involvement of Pakistan. Foreign players especially India will only make the matters worst.

thats the wrong perception he was talking about.

Afghanistan will never stabilize without subsequent involvement of Pakistan. Foreign players especially India will only make the matters worst.

agreed. that Afghanistan will never stabilize without the increased involvement of pakistan...and good that Pakistan is working in it(if it is)...and about India..well, India is already there working in much needed development work...and FYI, there is not India alone, so when you say , foreign nations will make it worse, yo should remember there are many other countries involved as well.

You seriously underestimate the CIA don't you? :P

They know everything what you are upto and what you want and what are your intentions in Afghanistan. Right now their priorities are different and hence the focus is not on you lot. What confidential extremely critical tech have you extracted from them? Killer drone tech? jet tech?

Actually we Indians are fine with a neutral Afghanistan as well but you are hell bent on making it your puppet state despite their own reservations against it. The only excuse you have is you took their 4 million Afghans during Soviet war. Now what is stopping you from deporting them? Go ahead, do it.

Afghanistan since king Zahir Shah has been friendly to India and Russia and even before him and we intend to make sure that if Afghanistan is not our satellite state, at least it should be neutrally cooperative and reasonably friendly.

US is 'worried' just to show you; when even we don't care what you think, how does it matter about what US thinks to you?:coffee:

.
Indians seem to misunderstand the relation of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Afghans (Afghan Pathans atleast) have always been heavily nationalistic and, grudgingly, hated Pakistan. I don't know why.

If there was another way to have a friendly afghanistan, we would have taken than route. India is making matters much worse and, unlike most Indians claim, this 'development project' that is happening in Afghanistan is not to keep the country 'neutral'. It's an easy way to corner us. You people don't understand our mutual relationship. Look at it now.

The war on terror is staged in Afghanistan, and yet, we are becoming victims of terrorism due to this war. Make the connection please.

.
Perception ????

Read it as REALITY. there is NO perception.

Indian state terrorism in Pakistan in 71, Indian terrorism in Pakistan specially NWFP and Karachi city in 80s in the wake of first Afghan War. Indian terrorism in Balochistan. The list is very long.

And as US has already decided to leave Afghanistan therefore US should focus on safe withdrawal instead of face saving stories

The war on terror is staged in Afghanistan, and yet, we are becoming victims of terrorism due to this war. Make the connection please.

Then you do know the reason why you are becoming victims. Your military apparatus should have disbanded the mujahideen as soon as Soviet war was over.

Think about it, man. If those guys had been given jobs in places like semi-rural programmes, arts and craft making, organizing special job schemes, or even assigned to textile industries (your textile industries are well known and big), or some other field these guys would have forgotten all the violence in a couple of years and settled down as lawful citizens of Pakistan and the extremist mentality would have vanished in their hearts.

Or if not given jobs, at least your government could have restricted them to live in Afghanistan and continue their mindless killing and disassociate with them completely, all while pressing the Afghan refugees to return back to their land.

Japanese were bombed by nuclear weapons and nothing was there in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But still they emerged from ashes and today those 2 places don't even look as if they were ever bombed. If Japanese could develop from nothing to such powerful country, then can also Afghans.

But because of one mis-calculation about outsourcing sabotage and proxy war against us to them and encouraging further aggression in them is ultimately causing so much trouble now in your country. These radicals have become so strong that they don't need your intel assistance as you can see in another thread here about how radicals make money from charities, drug smuggling and extract money from businesses. Please see that thread. It is article written by Pakistani media itself.

What is happening in your country, bro is a consequence of miscalculations by your military apparatus which is still continuing to make the same mistake again. You are the citizen of Pakistan; it is your right to have a good life and safe one in your land. There is still chance; don't be partisan towards "which terrorist groups" to finish and "which not". All of them are the same.

Blaming their work on us will not stop them from killing your people; Once a wolf tastes blood, he will definitely go for the neck of a human. This is what these terrorists are doing.

US created these terrorist groups to fight Soviet Union; but now it is doing the damage control against all of these groups; do the same. Follow the suit. Are you thinking that your army is short of weapons? Please don't believe in that. Think of it; your army says they are equipped and capable enough to keep us at bay. Do you think there is any shortage at all of weapons then? I don't think so.

Jana ji, please take this list to any international body with all evidences against us and prove us wrong then. Why don't you? Even your friend China is there in the UNSC. Why are you saying that you are sending us dossiers if we "are guilty"?

Please take the proof to UNO or other agencies and prove us wrong like we did. Empty list-making and reverse-blame strategy cannot work anymore.

Why Indians all the time begging role in A'stan?
Because sometimes in order to lead, one has to serve. It is tough for you to understand.

How we perceive our arch rival should not be a matter of concern to Americans, and they know that very well that Pakistan can compromise on drone strikes but never India. India is and has been Pakistan's enemy on eastern side sine the creation of Pakistan so the last thing that Pakistan would want to please the Americans is to allow the enemy to spread its influence on western side as well? I don't think so!!!
This is coming from a state which attacked a sovereign state under false pretenses for having WMD's............... give me a break......... they have the right for preemptive measures while we being their Major Non NATO Ally should let our enemy spread its wings on our western border. Talk about American double standards!
