Of course it is groundless. Only a handful of countries have thus far stood with the US. Others have not reacted and are watching the show from the sidelines. LOL You can gauge the mood at the WH by the reaction that the US has to go it all alone.

America has no moral compass after the unilateral war in Iraq which has led to this fiasco in the first place. No WMDs were found. America took revenge by removing Saddam. Only, the removal came at the highest cost imaginable. With Trump at the WH the moral compass has seized to exist. The world doesn't take the US seriously.

US establishment already knows, US already lost credibility. Look at what happened with China - US threatened reconsider one China policy, do this and that in south China sea, block Chinese goods etc. In reality US administration caved in and now serving fine wine to Chinese President.
