'Rape and murder' by US troops in Iraq

Five American soldiers have been accused of raping an Iraqi woman then killing her along with three members of her family, including a child, before burning their bodies to destroy the evidence.

Military officials in Baghdad said yesterday that the men were the subject of a criminal investigation after two soldiers from the same infantry platoon came forward with information about the alleged incident. A week-long preliminary inquiry had established that there was sufficient evidence to proceed.

One soldier is reported to have been arrested after admitting his role in the incident, while four others have had their weapons taken away.

It is the latest in a series of recent military investigations in which US troops are suspected of killing civilians in Iraq.

The United States military command in Baghdad said the five accused men were attached to the 502nd Infantry Regiment.

The soldiers were from the same platoon as two soldiers who were kidnapped and killed south of Baghdad this month.

The military has said one and possibly both of the killed soldiers were tortured and beheaded.

One official, who refused to be named, said the mutilation of the soldiers had stirred feelings of guilt and led at least one of the five to reveal the crime they had committed three months earlier.

The men were accused of attacking the woman in the town of Mahmoudiya, south of Baghdad, in March, before killing members of her family. The area is a hotbed of the insurgency. Sectarian killings and the deaths were seen in that context at the time.

At least four other cases involving allegations of American military abuses of Iraqi civilians are currently being investigated.

Charges of murder have already been brought against several personnel.

Among the most serious is the criminal investigation into reports that US marines went on a killing spree in the town of Haditha last November, killing up to 24 unarmed civilians.

But the Mahmoudiya allegations add a new dimension to the complaints against American military personnel in Iraq.

It is the first time that rape has been reported in such a case.

The alleged offences were committed at a time when no hostilities were reported in the area.
