Highlights

  1. India's deal to purchase S-400 air defence system may prompt Washington to impose sanctions on India.
  2. It was mentioned in the Congressional Research Service report.
  3. India had inked the deal in October 2018

A US Congressional report has warned that India's decision to ink a multi-billion dollar deal to purchase S-400 air defence system from Russia may prompt Washington to impose sanctions on India.
The Congressional Research Service (CRS) said in its report to Congress that India is "eager for more technology-sharing and co-production initiatives, while the United States urges more reforms in India's defence offsets policy and higher Foreign Direct Investment caps in its defence sector". It is to be noted that the CRS is an independent and bipartisan research wing of US Congress.

The CRS said that it has prepared the report "for the members of the Congress for them to make informed decisions." "India's multi-billion dollar deal to purchase the Russian-made S-400 air defence system may trigger US sanctions on India under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act," added the report.
Notably, the reports of the CRS are not an official report of the US Congress and independent experts prepare the reports of the CRS in order to help the American lawmakers to make informed decisions.
India and Russia had inked a USD 5 billion deal in October 2018 under which it was agreed that Moscow will give five units of the S-400 air defence missile systems to India. India decided to finalise the deal despite a warning from the US that the US may impose sanctions on New Delhi if it goes ahead with the deal.
On December 15, the US had imposed sanctions on Turkey for acquiring S-400 air defence systems from Russia. It may be recalled that the ground-to-air defenses system was acquired by Turkey from Russia in mid-2019. At that time Turkey had said that the acquisition poses no threat to NATO allies.

The S-400 Triumf is a mobile, surface-to-air missile system (SAM) and it is seen as the world's most dangerous operationally deployed modern long-range SAM (MLR SAM). Experts maintain that S-400 is much better than the US-developed Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system (THAAD).

Is US bending on foreign policy self destruction? I pity Modi for counting on such donkey allies.

Here comes Indians that's will say we not care USA, we have a free and neutral foreign policy, remember CAASTA, if this deal go through, the India will forget to have F-18E/F or F-35 in future

I believe this is to put pressure on Turkey, nothing related to India. India will get all waiver for at least next decade with no question asked and will also get latest and greatest American weapon. F-18 is already offered.

CRA reports are prepared by Independent analysts with absolutely no link to US govt so they have no idea whether US will impose sanctions or not.

In reality, India has already been informed that it has been given a waiver.

US always tries to please India as seen by US state dept designating Pakistan and China for lack of religious fredom but making no mention of India despite recommendation by their own advisory body.

American r arrogant. They have the attitude of being on top and share with no one. They believe the Indian will not survive without them but US can survive alone. The American are not pragmatic and will always have the master and u r slave mentality.

They believe they can force India to buy made in USA weapon only especially India r facing standoff with China. The American make their move well. You think India will abandon US weapon now and face stand off with China depending on Russia to support them?

Oh god now America will be threatened with BrahMOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS for the next 6 months straight

India will either kneel in front of Xi or Trump/Biden. Whatever choice, Modi will need to kneel. :enjoy:

When you side with the US, they expect total obedience. When you buy their weapons, you can only use it against US approved nations. If not, they will ban spare parts.

India is one country that will be very obedient puppy to the US. India prefer that role.

Very true, but reality is exactly opposite of what you had said. India is the only country which had diversified the defence, due to very same reason to avoid single dependency.
Air Force ( Israel , French, UK , Russia )
Navy: ( Russia, French, US)
Army ( All over the world )

The problem is, Indian cant trust Russian for war against China, hence they will use American weapon ( mostly PI, Drone, BECA etc. ) for that purpose. and Indian cant trust America for war against Pakistan ( at least in Past) , hence they avoid American weapon for Army and AF as of today.

So they end up with a mess of logistic and nothing... This strategy is stupid instead of smart. You ended up with zero trust from either side and they will milk u badly when opportunity comes. Just like how US is doing it.
