Yes, there is a strategic shift, and this always brings up new options for everyone.

What can Israel gain? Occupy and hold ground? That didn't work before.

As the last Israel/Lebanese war proved, Hizbullah is an extremely efficient outfit. I am no flag waver, but I was impressed at how they performed against vastly superior odds.

Nobody wants war, but from a purely technical curiosity, I'd like to see how things pan out.

There are more armed parties in Lebanon than just Hezbollah, Hezbollah obviously being the strongest. Hezbollah stated that if it is attacked, it will not resort to war of attrition strategy to wear out Israel, instead it will go full fledged during the first week. It will paralyze life in Tel Aviv, shut the air ports down, cause some damage and definitely kill Israeli's. It will stop at that, since Israel won't seek an ground invasion unless it wants many of its soldiers killed which will demoralize the local population. A strong Hezbollah means a stable Lebanon, if there wasn't a dominant party, like you said, Lebanon can easily fall into civil war which nobody is interested in.

The next war with the Shia terror entity in Lebanon will mean that Southern Lebanon will be wiped off the map.

This is the message that Israel has relayed to the Tehran occupiers in Lebanon through 3rd parties. They have told them the next war will be devastating.

In fact it's been said that Israel will take Lebanon back 300 years. Which is scary, given that they're already 500 years behind the west.
