US to keep 6,000-20,000 troops in Afghanistan post 2014

Washington: Top outgoing top American commander in Afghanistan has said that the US would keep between 6,000 and 20,000 troops in the war-torn nation after 2014.

Marine General John Allen made his recommendations to Defence Secretary Leon Panetta, but could not confirm what specific troop levels he has proposed as options.



Citing a senior military official, a report by the New York Times said that Allen gave Panetta plans for 6,000, 10,000 and 20,000 troops from which to choose for when NATO's combat mission ends at the close of 2014.

According to the paper, Allen noted that the risk for failure decreases as the troop levels increase, CBS News reports.

The Times could not determine whether President Obama had reviewed Allen's recommendations.

Defence officials said that Obama was expected to talk about them next week when Afghan President Hamid Karzai visits Washington.

So basically the taliban will just multiply like insects and take over the South again? Will the ANA be able to deal with the barbarian hoards on their own? How many soldiers are there now?

srsly, I can never understand why Afghanistan doesn't just break up. The country has never had a central govt in its entire history. The people are tribal and their sole concern is their tribes and ethnicities. Their worlds end at the borders of their villages and provinces. The Pashtuns/taliban hate everybody else and want to erase them. So just break the country up and give the Pashtuns their own little corner and let the rest have peace and prosperity. It's not like there's oil to fight over either so everybody can take whatever they want and call it a day.

Afghanistan is not equal to your age bud! they are bringing Taliban in and ANA is quite capable of eliminating all of them but it will take some time unlike NATO/US, ANA is not involved in political terrorism battles they will crush them as Taliban means nothing to them.

btw keep your adulate ideas with yourself and try to tell that to your leadership to bring down your internal issues with xyz groups within Iran.

U.S and NATO are not leaving afghanistan they are just reducing number of troops.
