The United States will officially hand over a naval ship to Bangladesh in a reflagging ceremony in California on May 23.

According to a media release, the US Coast Guard will officially decommission ‘Cutter Jarvis’ and transfer it to the Bangladesh Navy after renaming it as ‘BNS Somudro Joy’, in a ceremony at around 11 pm Bangladesh time at Coast Guard Island in Alameda, California.

Once transferred, this would be the largest ship in the Navy fleet.

US Pacific Area Commander Vice Admiral Paul F Zukunft and Bangladesh’s Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Muhammad Farid Habib will be present during the formal handover.

Jarvis is being transferred “as an Excess Defense Articles (EDA) through a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme to Bangladesh,” the media release said.

The BNS Somudro Joy will depart for Bangladesh later this year, it said. A 20-member Bangladesh naval team is in Alameda for the ceremony.

US officials had earlier said the ship would be gifted as part of its keenness to develop a stronger naval relationship for the maritime ‘peace and stability’ in the Asia-Pacific region.

US Ambassador to Dhaka Dan Mozena had said it would take several months of continued outfitting of the vessel and training of the crew after the transfer of the ship to Bangladesh Navy.

The ‘Jarvis’ sailed in the Pacific and served the US since 1972. It was decommissioned in Oct last year.

Training is underway for Bangladeshi naval officials in US to run the ship.

If you think any decision is not satisfactory or not justified you can always mail Webmaster. He will look into the issue. If it is not justified one your ban will be removed.

it is a old ship of 1972 nothing special and maintenance cost wont be cheap though , should have bought a new one from China and add staffs from USA and EU

A very nice buy indeed. :agree: This ship weighs 3200 tons. This is bigger than our most advanced Ulsan class frigate from S.K. Will the US mind upgrading the ship with Chinese systems? I don't see any beef with tech compromisation since its a 50 year old ship. It would have been a great addition if we could have pursued them to give us come Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate.

As for a name a big . If this is hinting at the supposedly awami "shomudro joy" at the intl arbitration court with Burma then its a wrong choice of name IMO. There was no joy with Burma but we got what we should have got minimally as per intl law. At best U can say its equal demarcation 50-50 between Burma & BD if not less for BD. If we couldn't get this bare minimum bilaterally then we should not even have a foreign ministry. Terming the verdict as "bejoy" is an epic joke.

how much did it cost?

No idea. The upgrade was done in US costing some $55 mn dollars under the Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization (FRAM) program of the United States Navy as per wiki:

I think we just paid for the upgrades while the hull was given free of costs, most likely. After all its united states.

The upgrade was done in 1990 - 1992 , decommissioned in 2012... you sure bd paid for upgrade and allowed it to serve USN for so long?
