US Ambassador in Ankara Francis Ricciardone said on Friday that the U.S will give three Super Cobra helicopters to Turkey, TGRT news channel reported. Turkey had been asking for Super Cobras to replace the helicopters it lost during its campaign against the PKK.

Meanwhile, one person died and two were wounded in an explosion in front of a gendarmerie garrison in the Göynük district of the southeastern province of Antalya on Friday afternoon. A suicide bomber who was carrying the bomb died and two officers were wounded. Another two troops died and three were wounded Friday in a terrorist ambush on the outskirts of the southeastern province of Şırnak while 26 people were taken into custody in Istanbul and Bitlis on terrorism-related charges.

An ensuing operation launched against PKK members in the area was widened in the early hours Friday, with commandos from a border gendarmerie command arriving on the scene with Sikorsky helicopters, while Cobra choppers and other land units also joined in the operation.

Super Cobras To Be Delivered To Turkey in March

1 March 2012 / EMRE SONCAN , ANKARA
Three AH-1 Super Cobra attack helicopters to be sold by the United States to Turkey will arrive in country in March, following negotiations to persuade the US administration to secure congressional approval for the sale, sources from the Ministry of Defense have told Today’s Zaman. The sale was approved by the US Congress in November.

The Obama administration formally notified the US Congress on Oct. 28 of proposal to sell three AH-1 Super Cobra twin-engine attack helicopters to Turkey from the US Marine Corps inventory. According to US law, the administration needs to notify Congress of the sale of arms to other countries and seek authorization. If the proposed sale is to a NATO member country, Congress has 15 days to reject the sale or it will be automatically authorized.

Turkey has had a long-standing request for Super Cobra helicopters. It has a shortage of attack helicopters, which it has been using in its ongoing fight against the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The process of securing congressional approval for the $111 million helicopter sale to Turkey was successfully completed as no motion to block the sale was brought to the agenda in Congress.

The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) currently has six operational Super Cobra helicopters that serve the TSK well in fighting terrorism. These helicopters have a delivery system for 12 rockets and they can fly for three hours. The topographic features of Turkey’s Southeast require a greater number of capable helicopters. The Super Cobra has proven its capabilities in comparison to other helicopters, in past TSK operations.

They do not give... We requested to buy from US inventory and congress accepted it... For ridiculus ammount of money if I might add...

Edit: Don't get me wrong but this is really old news...

Could be for the New LHD we are getting!

Personnaly for more effectief result i would fully overhaul the older Cobra's. Since they are more then 30 years old Turkey is free to do anything to that machine according to US Law. We could instal Umtas, Cirit, AVCI Helmet, ASELFLIR300 and other systems anytime we want!

We won't be getting any LHD for atleast 10 years... and T-129 is more suited for navy than Super Cobra. Super Cobra is heavier than T-129 but has less payload than T-129... And to be blunt T-129 is atleast a decade ahead of Super Cobra in tech.

Super Cobras are just for fulfill our urgent needs against PKK.

ok you almost answered my questions. I was wondering about a very capable T-129 when i read the news.

so against COIN operations you need a more rugged and sturdy platform which can take the beating and can deal with whatever PKK can throw at it?

Maybe but my guess is different. This deal was made in september 2011 when unfortunately we lost a lot fo soldiers to PKK attacks and people were raging to military and goverment for revenge and Goverment and Military didn't know when army will get first banch of T-129 which recently announced first T-129 will be ready for service in this April.

I personally think that, this deal was made in panic over goverments need of showing public that they are bound to their promise of fighting PKK.

thanks for detailing the history behind this sale. I am looking for side by side comparison between the two gunships now.

I am still willing to see 50 Z-10P deal being signed in near future with China to license produced it in Pakistan!
