Taliban negotiators and United States officials meeting in Qatar on Saturday finalised clauses to be included in a draft agreement to end the 17-year-old Afghan war, according to Taliban sources.

Details provided by the sources include apparent concessions from both sides, with foreign forces to be withdrawn from the country in 18 months from the future signing of the deal.

US special peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad is heading to Afghan capital Kabul to brief President Ashraf Ghani after the end of the six-day talks, the sources and a diplomat said.

It is unclear whether a joint statement will be issued, or whether the provisions have been fully accepted by the US side.

According to sources, Taliban offered assurances that Afghanistan will not be allowed to be used by al Qaeda and Islamic State militants to attack the United States and its allies – a key early demand of Washington.

The Taliban say that they will finalise a timeline for a ceasefire in Afghanistan but will only open talks with Afghan representatives once the ceasefire is implemented.

Other clauses include a deal over the exchange and release of prisoners from the warring sides, the removal of an international travel ban on several Taliban leaders by the United States and the prospect of an interim Afghan government after the ceasefire is struck, the Taliban sources said.

Last week, Pakistan and the United States agreed to push for the ‘intra-Afghan dialogue’ to seek a political solution to the lingering war in Afghanistan, even as both sides struggled to convince the insurgents for direct talks with the Kabul administration.

“Meetings here were more productive than they have been in the past. We made significant progress on vital issues,” Khalilzad tweeted after six days of talks with the Taliban in Qatar.

Once the above is committed, then the following is a logical next step:

foreign forces to be withdrawn from the country in 18 months from the future signing of the deal.

Job done. :D

(All that is left is the usual "trust but verify" stuff.)

in a BBC documentary a few years ago covering the war in Afghanistan US allied Afghan fighters picked up radio signals of Taliban in a exchange

the ANA commander said to the Taliban we are brothers so lets stop fighting, Taliban replied if we are brothers why you are fighting us ?

ANA replied you have been fighting us for 16 years when are you going to stop give it up

Taliban replied until the day of judgement doesnt come we will keep fighting

from ANA and American side there was the look of disappear and silence

sums it up you can't win against these people

Well what we need to see here is that, prior to withdrawal, US is getting this “commitment” from the Taliban rather than the Afghan govt or ANA. And the “commitment” being asked is only for support against terrorisim, which took 17 years to realize as the key to resolving this conflict - the question is by who? The taliban? US? Or both?

This is a very positive news for Pakistan specially because India will lose it's umbrella protection in Afghanistan when the US leaves and the cease fire is established.

Pakistan can now move the Infantry Divs of Strike Corps to their original positions i.e. Eastern Border.

After completing the fence work, a mechanism will be established and luckily the Duran Line will never be the same (open and visa less). Pakistan already announced to build Observation Posts and Forts along whole the Western Border Fence so it will be a simple well observed border with light infantry and paramilitary level deployment.

The battle hardened and experienced units from Infantry, Armor, Artillery will come back to their original jobs which will numerically a bad news for Indian IBGs plan (Cold Start Doctrine).

British Channel 4 aired a documentry a few years ago showing actually combat footage from British soldiers situated in Helmand. A senior army officer was sharing his experience in a combat zone with his comrades surrounded by Afghan Taliban fighters. The Brits ran out of ammunition and became increasingly desperate to save their lives. Many of the Brit soldier accepted they would die and started to notify some of their family members in desperate circumstances but the Taliban commander along with a tribal elder managed to contact the senior British militery officer in charge of the besieged camp. The Brit offered his surrender, he along with his colleagues knew they would be captured and beheaded however the Taliban offered them a safe passage out of the rough rugged desert and mountains of Helmand. For 8 hours they drove the 15+ Brit soldiers to a secure location and allowed a rescue NATO helicopter to evacuate them back to their original camp. The Brit officer, now retired and suffering heavily from PTSD was very thankful and greatful to the Afghan Taliban as they kept to their promise.

IF this news is true, it is a very welcome development. However, with all the fake news being thrown around by the enemies, it is important that we check with authenticity of the news. Lets wait and see if anything official comes through.
