US senators introduce bill for duty-free economic zones along Pak-Afghan border

. . .
Trajan horse. This is how they will infiltrate terrorists into Pakistan

First the border between Afghanistan is porous and the US or others don't really need to set up a 'duty free zone' to 'infiltrate' Pakistan and second Pakistan is free to decline the offer.

The bill secures duty free status for any imports into the US from this economic zone.
Absolutely fantastic news. If this is leveraged properly it could change the fortune of Af-Pak region from one that is a moniker for terrorism to trade and exports. Think how Bangla went from being "begging basket" from 30 years ago to global export champion in RMGs with 30% more exports than Pakistan.

This was because Europe and America gave Bangla similar trade preference with regards to ready made garments. Result today I go to my local mall and it is full of Bangla made clothing from cheap to top brands.

US senators introduce bill for duty-free economic zones along Pak-Afghan border

WASHINGTON/ LAHORE: US senators have introduced a bipartisan bill to promote and generate economic benefits for Pakistan and Afghanistan by establishing Reconstruction Opportunity Zones along Afghanistan and Pakistan border.

The bill is called the ‘Pakistan-Afghanistan Economic Development Act’. The legislation proposes the set up of a reconstruction opportunity zones along Pak-Afghan border areas. “The bill would establish Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) in Afghanistan and Pakistan’s border regions to allow certain products from these areas to enter the US duty-free,” a statement read.

The bipartisan bill was introduced by Democrat Senators Van Hollen, Maria Cantwell and Republican Senator Todd Young. The outlined objectives of the say that fostering trade with the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region will help bolster economic development and improve the livelihoods of local populations.

The effort will further US diplomatic objectives in the region by contributing to political stability and addressing the root causes of violent extremism, as well as expanding trade with Pakistan will strengthen ties with a key strategic partner and enhance economic development in a region important to US interests.

Pakistani-born American Democrat leader and well-known businessman Tahir Javed says this legislation allows textile goods to be sent to US without duty.”If [this] bill becomes part of law after approval, it will be of great benefit to Pakistan for 10 years,” he said, adding that Pakistan’s exports to US could increase tenfold.

Javed expressed the belief that the legislation will bring economic benefits to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The democrat leader said the bill has been introduced to promote stability in the region and can solve many of Pakistan’s problems.

The Democrat leader said this bill could mean relations between Pakistan and US may find a new direction Efforts will be made to get 60 votes in making the economic bill a law, he said.

Mark my word nothing will happen as this is just pie in the sky. When there was a good will for Pakistan and bill was proposed there were plenty of voices against it and now US forces are leaving and all of a sudden bill shows up. I bet in lawless areas of Afghanistan US investors are going to sink their dollars somehow i don't think so.

. .
If they'll use this opportunity to manufacture and export their native crafts, carpets and renderings... they'll be able to protect their culture, customs and crafts and if they'll use this to set up jeans and t-shirts then they'll kill native culture and crafts and substitute it with just another copy of generic trash ravaging rest of manufacturing economies.

Make less, make right, sell for a fair recompense.
Never compete others in undercutting prices. Value your wares, skills and work, be fair and seek fair recompense.

No one has to sink anything into this arrangement. Pakistan only needs to permit transit of goods from this zone produced by Afghan or Pakistani artisans into US markets.

There is no down side for Pakistan unless it is in the national interest of Pakistan to continue to live next to a economically isolated, poor, unstable neighbor that is forced to rely on the opium trade to survive. Perhaps this will be disadvantageous to elements in the ISI that continue to profit from drug trade and illicit smuggling. When it comes to Afghanistan even the Chinese are increasing frustrated with Pakistan's inability to help China exploit Afghanistan's mineral wealth.

The setup of the zone will be subject to the 'Pakistan-Afghanistan Economic Development Act’ that the Americans wrote, then in fact how the setup, which companies could and could not be in the zone, who can manage the zone's activities, what American agencies can be there to 'certify' the zone's compliances, etc. This is economic colonialism -- weaponized markets to colonize weaker countries. In fact, this will promote Pakistan's political and economic divisions and thus destablize Pakistan. If this so-called ethnic-Pak senator wants to promote his home country's benefits, then treat Pakistan as a sovereign country and respect Pakistan's laws -- not to create another division to promote privileges and divisions.

First positive step by the US but what is the catch?

That's so bull. If the US intends to be good to Pakistan, then respect Pakistan's sovereign rights to make its own trades and execute its own laws instead of trying a separate zone in which US dictates the regulations, who can and cannot be in the 'zone', and insert American agencies (spies of course and NGOs to prepare eventual color revolutions and riots). This is another weaponization of American market to colonize by control and divide Pakistan.

.
If it helps the local so it's good, but those zones will be an easy target for those who want to disturb peace in the region, Plus If Taliban is ok with them they might benefit from them too.
