US Secretary of State warns North Korea that military action is an ‘option’
Global Village Space

Military action by the United States against nuclear-armed North Korea is an “option on the table” if the threat from the rogue regime escalates, Washington’s top diplomat Rex Tillerson said Friday.

The strong comments from the secretary of state, in Asia for his first foray into crisis management, appear to signal a sea change in American policy towards the isolated country.

Tillerson’s tour comes after a missile launch last week that Pyongyang described as a drill for an attack on US bases in Japan.

The US has 28,000 troops stationed in South Korea to defend it from the North, but the capital Seoul is within the range of Pyongyang’s artillery and analysts believe any conflict could risk rapid escalation and heavy casualties.

Even so, Tillerson said the United States’ “strategic patience” had ended — the stance of the previous administration under Barack Obama.

Over the past 11 years, North Korea has responded by carrying out five nuclear tests and dozens of missile launches, and made it clear it is not prepared to relinquish weapons of mass destruction in the face of American “hostility”.

Under that policy, the US ruled out engaging the North until it made a tangible commitment to denuclearisation, hoping that internal stresses in the isolated country would bring about change.

Tillerson said North Korea could no longer be allowed to continue developing its nuclear and missile technology. “That would leave North Korea with significant capabilities that would represent a true threat,” he said.
On Thursday in Tokyo, he also conceded that 20 years of US attempts to “denuclearise” North Korea had been unsuccessful. “I think it’s important to recognise that the political and diplomatic efforts of the past 20 years to bring North Korea to the point of denuclearisation have failed.”

“That includes a period where the United States has provided $1.35bn in assistance to North Korea as an encouragement to take a different pathway.”

“In the face of this ever-escalating threat, it is clear that a different approach is required. Part of the purpose of my visit to the region is to exchange views on a new approach.”

“We are exploring a new range of diplomatic, security, economic measures. All options are on the table,” Tillerson told reporters at a joint press conference with his South Korean counterpart Yun Byung-Se.

“Certainly we do not want to, for things to get to the military conflict,” he said. “If they elevate the threat of their weapons program to a level that we believe require action, then, that option’s on the table.”

There are strong words from both sides but little action. Russia and China cannot abandon NK and the US knows it.

I can't believe the US is actually worried about DPRK's nuclear development. If we all didn't know better i would say US is sh!ting his pants right now. Come now Uncle Sam, you are considered to be the strongest, possesses thousands of nukes and you are starting to panic? Just leave DPRK alone and let Kim build up his own nuke stockpile capable of hitting US mainland (eventually) OK?

As for the military option you speak of, are you waiting for an invitation? You sure as hell didn't need one for Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria so what's with the verbal warning? :secret::secret:

The military option is their last resort, they wanted to avoid it but NK has made it impossible for them to avoid it. So, it is totally NK's fault. This is what they want to say.

Shifting the blame to others is nothing new when it is coming from the US. I know some old man here who blames China for the creation of DPRK and the reason why the US turned Vietnam into a punching bag is all because of China

Blaming others is easier than taking responsibility for one's own misdeeds.

What make you think we are waiting for invitation ? Did we wait for Germany's invitation before D-Day ?

Prove it. At least China should support NKR in public ? What is China waiting for ? An invitation ?

Because it's been 4 years since DPRK detonated its first nuke old man  , too scared to lift a finger or still waiting for an invitation?

US scared ?

The real people who are wearing adult diapers are the PLA generals.

The US trolling the South China Sea is like Uncle Sam walking across the street from House China.

The US hitting NKR is like Uncle Sam standing right at the property line of House China and shooting guns into the ground.

What did your China do in Desert Shield ? Nada. China was supposedly Iraq's ally or perhaps even friend. China sold weapons to Iraq and trained the Iraqi military. And yet with Desert Shield, your China did nothing except make a prediction that Iraq would lose and the US would have tens of thousands of casualties. In making that prediction, your China tacitly admit to being helpless against the US.

Then when Desert Storm came around and the US did not have those tens of thousands of casualties, those PLA generals shat their pants while standing in front of the Politburo trying to explain away their incompetence.

We are not waiting for anyone. We are putting the fear and uncertainty of US into this generation of PLA generals. Just as their predecessors did not know what to do with US, except to make a prediction that turned out to be wrong, today's crop of PLA leadership are wondering what the crazy Americans will do, except this time, the crazy Americans will do whatever they want right at China's front door.

Two ways this could go...

1) The US take some form of 'military action' against NKR and not inform China of it.

With Trump, Tillerson, and Mathis, the world is not going to rule this out. China will appear helpless against America. This will make the SCS our -- not China's -- domain in the eyes of the international public. This will embolden US allies in Asia and turn neutral heads towards US.

2) The US quietly informs China of possible 'military action' against NKR and put forth an ultimatum.

China either complies with US requests regarding how to put NKR in line or risk option 1. Unlike Iraq, China cannot afford to abandon NKR. If China complies, the US will take one step back and let China take the glory while behind closed doors, both will know who is really in charge in Asia, and it ain't China. If China does not comply, then the PLA will amass at the China-Korea border and prepare to shoot fleeing civilian North Korean refugees as CNN videos and broadcast the horrific carnage.

Bring it on, buddy. The world is tired of empty rhetoric. We want to see action.

You threatened us with Trump. You have him now. Show us what you are made out of.

No, if the current pulse of international media is any indication, the world is anxious of US rhetoric.

We do not need to threaten or even brandish any weaponry. We just need to smile at the appropriate direction...:)

Just stop wasting time. Time to put your money where your mouth is. You have had it your way. Now the onus is on you to prove to us how tough you really are. Words and threats aren't going to cut it. We are waiting.

Just stop wasting time.
It is our time -- not yours -- to waste. :enjoy:

Time to put your money where your mouth is.
We have done that several times over while your China have not had any real war experience since the end of WW II.

Now the onus is on you to prove to us how tough you really are.
At our leisure, son.

Words and threats aren't going to cut it. We are waiting.
And you can wait a little longer.

Rex Tillerson Doesn't Rule Out Preemptive Strike on North Korea

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned Friday that America’s policy of “strategic patience” with North Korea is over, and said pre-emptive military action is “on the table” if the rogue regime presses ahead with its nuclear weapons program.

Tillerson’s comments, delivered during his visit to Seoul, are the bluntest yet from the Trump administration amid a spiraling crisis over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs, and signal a more aggressive U.S. response to the historically erratic Hermit Kingdom.

“Let me be very clear: The policy of strategic patience has ended,” Tillerson said at a joint press conference with South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se.

The former ExxonMobil CEO said that after two decades of failed and costly attempts to contain Pyongyang’s nuclear development, it was time for a new approach.

“We are exploring a new range of security and diplomatic measures,” he said, referring to the possibility of a pre-emptive strike but offering no further elaboration. “If they elevate the threat of their weapons program to a level that we believe requires action, that option is on the table.”
