Iran-backed Houthi rebels have fired nine missiles at Saudi Arabia since meeting with new UN peace envoy

Repeated Houthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia show that Iran is trying to prevent a political resolution to Yemen's war, the United States said, as the rebels launched another strike on the kingdom's south on Saturday.

The White House said the attacks "call into question the Houthis’ commitment to a peace process".

They also "demonstrate that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is continuing to disrupt a nascent political process, escalate hostilities, and destabilise the region by proliferating weapons to the Houthis and others", it said in a statement released in Friday.

The Houthi missile launched on Saturday was targeted at the city of Najran, said Col Turki Al Malki, spokesman for the Saudi-led militarycoalition supporting Yemen's government.

"It was successfully intercepted and the debris fell on residential areas, lightly wounding one Indian expatriate," Col Al Malki said.

The Houthi-run Saba news agency said earlier that a ballistic missile was fired at a Saudi National Guard base in the city.

Saudi forces last Sunday intercepted seven Houthi missiles launched toward Saudi cities, including Riyadh, killing one person. Another missile fired at Jazan on Thursday was also brought down, Col Al Malki said.

The coalition said forensic examination of the wreckage showed that the missiles fired on Sunday were supplied by Iran.

Iran denies arming the Houthis but separate investigations by the UN, the US and a weapons-tracking group have all found evidence that weapons and explosives used by the rebels were supplied by Tehran.

The UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned the rebels' missile attacks on Saudi Arabia “in the strongest possible terms”, saying they posed a threat to regional security.

Council members “expressed alarm at the stated intention of the Houthis to continue these attacks against Saudi Arabia, as well as to launch additional attacks against other states in the region”.

The council called for dialogue to reach a political settlement that would end the war in Yemen, now in its fourth year.

The UN special envoy for Yemen held talks with the Houthis in Sanaa last week during his first visit to the rebel-held capital since talking up the post on March 19.

Martin Griffiths, a former British diplomat who took over from Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, earlier held talks with Yemeni President Abdrabu Mansur Hadi and his ministers in Riyadh.

The definition of "peace" in American encyclopedia: Any thing that serves our interests even if it is a destructive killer machine that has been bombing hell out of people in Yemen for the past 4 years.

That is what America is good at. Sowing hate and enmity. Such a nasty country.

It is already getting what it deserves. It got humiliated in Syria. Now it's running with its tail behind its back. Begs nations to do more in Afghanistan. Lost in Iraq and Vietnam. What a humiliation.

we must be living in some sort of alternate universe or something? the US isn't just blatantly lying anymore. its baselessly accusing others of things its doing itself.

its entire presence in Syria is to ensure a prolonged war. Isis has been anahilated with the exception of that 5% strategic area around the Syrian-Iraqi border where the Americans and their Kurdish playthings cant seem to root out..

its done everything it can to prolong the war in Syria. aimlessly sending in ATGMS to known terrorists to hurt Syrian armor and kill Syrian military personnel. physically trying to place itself as abarrier between Iranian backed militia in Iraq/Syrian government forces..

"accidently" bombing Syrian government forces in a strategic area immidiatly before an ISIS attack split government forces into 2 in DEZ...

you could go on and on.... its done almost anything it can get away with to prolong and save their jihadis in Syria and Iraq.

now its coming in with a straight face and accusing iran of playing this game?? I mean seriously? this is becoming laughable.. I never thought the US would get this pathetic.

The irony is colossal. The Americans who literally created ISIS are lecturing others about preventing peace.

These double faced Americans have created a habit of playing blame games when things aren't going their way. Even snakes have some principles.

Iran has totally owned the Yanks in Syria and elsewhere in the ME. The humiliation is simply put indescribable.

Providing Houties with Blastic missiles is definitely a non-sense move.... Iran should keep its nose out of other's business.

Why? When the US provides ISIS with missiles too. Helps to relocate them after they get defeated by Iran. There is irrefutable evidence of the US constantly doing this, so why shouldn't Iran help the Yemeni, Syrian, Lebanese and Iraqi people?

Saudis are killing Yemenis for over 3 years. Iran has every right to help them defend themselves against Saudi aggression whether you like it or not!
