US Rifles not Suited to Warfare in Afghan Hills

Guys thanks for sharing such a nice and useful topic here.. Its really interesting!

.
Oh but Taliban are fighting with decades old weapons so who come Yankees failed to do so with the most modern rifles ?

.
Jana I don't believe any here has said the AK-47 wasn't a good weapon. The M4 currently in use is a good weapon as well. just not well suited for the terrain of Afghanistan. And actually it isn't the weapon but the weapon caliber. The FN Scar will address this issue as far as special operation forces go. The rest of the army will have to navigate the political aspects of the procurement process to get them. We will see how that goes. My guess is they will get them.

On a side note one of my brothers has an M4 style AR-15 that is made to fire the 7.62 x 39mm ammo.

Like the article said the M4 is used for modern warfare which is mostly close combat and policing roles. Suppression also plays a role when targets engaged over 500m, gives the sniper time to engage sucessfully. The head count on both sides dosnt say that the Taliban are winning, they are just outlasting the invaders. Thats where the home ground advantage comes in. The Americans have a country to go back to, the Taliban do not.

Which caliber will the US SF guys use for FN SCAR (7.62x39 or 7.62x51)?

.
5.56 served the Americans well in Iraq, in Afg the engagement ranges are much more longer. 5.56 was adopted by NATO counteries with the Soviet Threat in mind and for MOUT in the Europian theater. I dont think Americans will change caliber, in terms of logistics they can organise and bear the costs of using both 5.56*45 and 7.62*51.
Well this isn't being effective for them in Afghanistan isn't it? I didn't mean a complete change for their entire armed forces. But at least those regiments that are specifically trained for Afghanistan's terrain.

The older models of Kalashnikovs are proving to be more effective than the M4s and FNs as we can see now.

And now ur being hipocrites by callin americans not knowin anythin about kindness while u urself are like the same as them........people still Remember wat hapened in Punjab Jalian wala Bagh,Balouchistan still remembers bastards like robert sandamen , Monroe etc.
You very much misunderstood my post, Pakistan Nationalist...

I was talking about hearts & minds in case you didn't notice. Take a look at the British and Americans and how they work in the likes of Afghanistan, you'll find they work quite differently especially where hearts & minds is concerned.

And look up the meaning of Hypocrite, Hypocrisy, you'll find it gets in every country, including yours!

Its a a bit more complicated than that...

Speaking about bigger calibre weapons, the British have a new sniper rifle for the likes of Afghanistan, the L115A3, .338, (8.59mm) calibre, range of 1500 metres, muzzle velocity of nearly 950m/s, new telescopic sight, Schmidt and Bender 5-25X56 PM II. An astonishing peice of kit, believe me.
