U.S new anti-missile defense strategy poses serious threat to Pakistan

United States (US) enters a race of developing advance anti-missile defense system following shadow threats from different countries. Development of American anti-missile system and its location in strategic areas including South Asia Region can provoke arms race that can destroy regional balance. This development no doubt has threat for Pakistan ballistic missile which deter Indian aggression.

President Donald Trump unveiled of his plan to terminate the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. This announcement led to serious concerns about the return of Cold War-style tensions over U.S. and Russian deployments of intermediate-range missiles in Europe and elsewhere and the future of the 2010 New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START).

In another move, President Donald J. Trump, Vice President Michael R. Pence and Acting Defense Secretary Patrick M. Shanahan announced the release of the 2019 Missile Defense Review in January this year at the Pentagon, a policy framework that focuses on emerging missile threats. It also stresses on robust regional missile defense for U.S. forces abroad and allies and partners against all potential adversaries.

It is important to say that this January Pentagon published report. In this part regarding anti-missile defense system India is being considered as a partner and a key element of American Strategy in Indo-Pacific region. And China is being considered as main enemy in Pentagon Missile Defense Review. In such situation, all Chinese partners including Pakistan have a chance to be taken under American aim.

The MDR also calls for countering the regional missile threat to U.S. and ally forces. The Pentagon sees Iran, North Korea and Russia as major threats to national security. China’s increasing number and types of short, medium and intermediate- range missiles that include hypersonic and advanced cruise missiles are also matter of concerns for US. The report also emphasized on a layered approach. This includes integrated air and missile defense, cooperation with allies, increased numbers of missile defense interceptors, and new technologies for intercepting advanced threats.

Within this framework of MDR, a number of key policy principles will shape missile defense capability and posture.US plans to develop and field missile defenses to stay ahead of the projected missile threats to the homeland from states such as North Korea and Iran. It will also depend on nuclear deterrence to counter the large and sophisticated Russian and Chinese intercontinental missile capabilities. Missile defenses will continue to back the security of allies and partners and defend U.S. forces deployed abroad. US plans to work with allies and partners to help them better defend themselves against the full range of regional missile threats from any potential missile armed adversary. US will pursue new missile defense concepts and advanced technologies including disruptive capabilities such as boost phase intercept to address the pace and scope of evolving missile threats.

United States has become a new strategic partner of India.US has also been stressing on giving key role to India in Afghanistan. In this report, US announces to support its allies and partners. So, India being a partner may be equipped with anti-ballistic missile system which will be a serious threat to national security of Pakistan.

Pakistan has been facing a serious threat on Indian and Afghan borders due to involvement of India. The country is not only facing external threat but it is also facing internal security threat due to involvement of India. It will be serious threat for Pakistan in case US involves in race of anti-ballistic missile race in this region. In such conditions it is necessary for Pakistan to criticize Washington on any international disarmament organization to protect Independence of Pakistan.

Bro, are you not paying attention?

FYI: https://thediplomat.com/2018/10/india-russia-sign-5-5-billion-s-400-deal-during-modi-putin-summit/

Pakistan need to fix its economy (TOP PRIORITY) and then look forward to induct these type of systems (NEAR FUTURE PRIORITY); this is the only way forward.

The Cold War era mentality of picking sides, is FLAWED foreign policy. Pakistan should strive for decent relations with all major powers of the world; in this manner, we can have a say in their dealings with India, or we can convince them to compensate us under the garb of 'strategic balance'.

My greatest fear is that this arms-race might get out of our hands at some point due to India attracting greater levels of foreign investment than ever before. Pakistan needs to up its game ASAP.
