A US embassy employee (in black vehicle) leaves a police station after his diplomatic immunity is confirmed in Peshawar on Tuesday.

Pakistan police free US man held at airport

Embassy worker who was carrying bullets in baggage released after consulate intervention

A US embassy employee was released after being held for questioning in Pakistan Tuesday when airport security officials discovered bullets in his luggage, police said.

The American was about to fly from the northwestern city of Peshawar to the capital Islamabad when he was taken into police custody, said Tahir Ayub, a senior police superintendent.

He was released after four hours when officials from the US consulate in Peshawar produced documents to show the man worked at the consulate.

"He's been released to the consulate," a US official in Islamabad said. "He's at the consulate now."

Embassy employee

The American, who is an embassy employee, is usually based in Islamabad but was temporarily assigned to the Peshawar consulate, the official said.

Police officers had earlier said they would hold the man until his identity had been verified by the foreign office in Islamabad and a US official in the capital had said the embassy was looking into the details of the reports.

"He has diplomatic status," the official said. "We're in contact with Pakistani authorities on the details on the case."

Pistol and 12 rounds

Ayub said a pistol and a magazine of 12 rounds had been recovered from the man's luggage, while another police officer said security officials had only found bullets.

The detention was likely to revive memories of Raymond Davis, an American CIA contractor who shot and killed two Pakistanis in the eastern city of Lahore in January 2011.

A third Pakistani died when he was hit by an embassy vehicle racing to extract Davis from the scene where an angry mob had gathered.

Compensation

After initial confusion, the US embassy in Islamabad said Davis had diplomatic immunity, which Pakistan refused to recognise. Davis spent almost two months in jail before being released after the payment of compensation to the families of the two men killed.

The incident was a major blow to the relationship between the US and Pakistan, a key ally in the terror war. Ties were just beginning to thaw when US commandos killed Osama Bin Laden in a Pakistani military town.

Diplomatic Immunity does not cover firearms on flights.

Do you think Pakistani diplomats can carry firearms on airlines in the US, since they too have diplomatic immunity ?

If Pakistani diplomat would have been carrying firearms he would surely have been tried for in courts but here we are talking about US citizens and you know very well that US govt. will never allow any of it's citizen to be tried in Pakistan and with slight twisting and turning and bending of international laws as per the requirement of US and in addition to some Telex Transfers a release is guaranteed in Pakistan.

Even if he carries AK-47 on flight or kills Pakistani nationals on Pakistani soil and is caught, his release is guaranteed.

Eastern borders are not safe, Western and North Western borders are subject to intrusions, south western side is subject to intrusions, east is sensitive. and within the boundaries itself all foreign forces from all the 3 countries surrounding Pakistan + USA are spreading havoc and walking free.

And add to that the government itself is spreading havoc.

What is working in favor of Pakistan?

Regret to say that people here are going OTT over the US diplomats. There is an international code for diplomats called ‘Diplomatic immunity’.

I have personally experienced an incident back in the 60’s. I travelled to France (before the days when UK in was in EU) with a family friend who was a minor diplomat (2nd Secretary) in the UK High Commission to help him drive back a Mercedes. Normally, Diplomats has special ‘CD’ number plates so they can go thru the customs without being checked.

This was a new car delivered in Germany so it did not have the diplomatic number plate on it. At Dover, after we were waived thru immigration; UK Customs wanted to inspect the car and the luggage inside. This gentleman refused claiming his diplomatic status.

We waited for about one hour and after his credentials were checked, we were allowed to leave and even though I was not a diplomat, my luggage was not searched as it was inside the car.

Each Embassy has an agreed number of staff who have diplomatic status and it applies universally. Raymond Davies was a special case; let us not get carried away with anti-Americanism. Police were doing their duty when they stopped this US national and also acted properly when he was let go. That is end of the matter.

Does diplomatic immunity means a person can carry firearms whenever and where ever he like? Can Pakistani diplomats do the same in US and get away with it?

America is not Pakistan, where terrorists attacks are a daily thing. Out LEAs are good enough to take care and provide security to any diplomat from any xyz country, therefore no need to carry firearms.

This is US specific thing not some international law. Plus no matter how big a diplomat you are I don't think you can carry firearms or bullets on airplanes. And there must be some procedure to follow like declaring firearms at the time of check in not like in this case when it was "discovered" by airport security that there are bullets in his luggage.

it does'nt matter

diplomatic immunity means the host country cannot arrest a dipomat ...it may ask him to leave but can never arrest or put him on trial.....
