WASHINGTON: The US military chief will accompany the top US diplomat when he visits Islamabad next week and the need to fight terrorists would be “the primary part” of their discussions with Pakistani leaders, says US Defence Secretary James Mattis.

At a Tuesday afternoon news briefing at the Pentagon, Mr Mattis also rebuffed suggestions that private military forces could join the fight in Afghanistan, and possibly replace regular US troops.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Joseph F. Dunford, who also attended the briefing, said the US had “permanent interests in South Asia” and wanted to “maintain a presence (there) to have influence in that region”.

Pompeo, Dunford set to hold meetings with Imran next week

“The secretary of state and the chairman are going to fly in to Islamabad to meet with the new government that’s in place there now,” he said.

Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and Gen Dunford are expected in Islamabad in the first week of September for talks with their counterparts.

They are also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Imran Khan.

In their talks with Pakistani officials, the delegation will “make very clear what we have to do, all of our nations, in meeting our common foe, the terrorists,” Secretary Mattis said. “And make that a primary part of the discussion.”

Gen Dunford said that the US would maintain both diplomatic and security presence in South Asia and the form of that presence was going to change over time.

Gen Dunford’s inclusion in the delegation dispels the impression that this was not a proper visit but just a stopover, as US state and defence secretaries were both going to be in New Delhi next week for the first two-plus-two talks between the United States and India.

But Secretary Mattis’ emphasis on the need to fight terrorists reignites the controversy stirred last week after Secretary Pompeo’s call to the prime minister.

The US Department of State issued a statement after the call, saying that “Secretary Pompeo raised the importance of Pakistan taking decisive action against all terrorists operating in Pakistan”. Islamabad rejected the US statement as incorrect, saying that this issue was not discussed.

At the Pentagon briefing, Secretary Mattis avoided whipping up the controversy and did not comment when a journalist asked if he trusted the new Pakistani leadership’s commitment to fight terrorism.

Mr Mattis, however, said that Secretary Pompeo and he were going to New Delhi for talks aimed at further strengthening a growing partnership with India.

“We see the strengthening of India’s democracy, its military, its economy as a stabilising element in the world,” he said. “And we want to make certain that where we have common interests, we are working together.”

He said that a number of agreements would be finalised at this two-plus-two meeting in New Delhi.

Could be Imran's Musharraf moment. Let's see what he does if Arms are twisted.

No false promises from our side and no commitments which we cannot do and simply not feasible. And US is to be told about actual situation and where to draw line when it comes to pressurize Pakistan with unwanted demands. Relations on mutual respect and militarily aid shouldn't be our request/demand.

Prime Minister Imran Khan arrived at General Headquarters, Rawalpindi on Thursday morning for a security briefing, the army's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said in a tweet.

"Prime Minister Imran Khan arrived to visit GHQ. Received on arrival by COAS [Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa]. PM being briefed on defence, internal security and other professional matters," ISPR said.

"Ministers of Defence, Foreign Affairs, Finance, Information and Minister of State for Interior are accompanying the PM," it added.

The Thursday meeting follows PM Khan and Gen Bajwa's first-ever official interaction as chief executive and army chief on Monday this week at the Prime Minister's Office.

A statement following their meeting had stated that the two had pledged to work closely for establishment of peace in the country and the region.

They “expressed resolve to bring enduring peace and stability in the country while also continuing efforts for regional peace,” the Prime Minister Office said in a statement.

Although the Monday meeting was supposed to be a courtesy call, the focus of discussion, it is said, had quickly shifted to security in the country and the neighbourhood.

More follows

Our establishment has already started working on it.

Musharaf was a dictator with no home support and needed US support to stay in Power even if it meant disaster of Pakistan. IK on the other hand, is an elected PM, he does not take policy decisions on his own without approval from both houses of parliament. It won't be easy armtwisting him.

Will they do the smart thing and take the conversation towards the terror havens and instability in afg? The need for the u.s. to play its part towards a peaceful settlement in afg? End to terror heavens in afg? That the IEA is not really Pak's problem? That Pak is willing to lend an ear to legitimate u.s interests like afg not being the heart of terror in the region? That Pak's interests are and will remain an afg that does not sponsor, aid and perpetrate terror in the region?

Signalling before their arrival will be step towards an independent Pakistani policy. Cannot be the same "we're also victims of terror" or only reacting to them setting the narrative. Else if not, same-old-same-old.

US military chief is a liar, he is guilty of falsely accusing Pakistan military in the past. He must not be allowed to enter Pakistan. Pompous should only meet the assistant secretary in the foreign office. He ain't worth PM's time.

Hence Islam is all against a one-man rule!!! It gives a great importance on consultations!! The Ottoman Sultans used to keep a great body of advisers and were open to debates....

Give your ears to all, voice to none....

Looks like the US side is getting impatient, so Pak side needs to show superb Sabr and Shukr...

With the Chinese firing up all her cylinders, this visit must be much more than mere Afganistan!!! Unfortunate for the USA, this time this "Knock knock knocking on the heaven's door" might remain unanswered....

The time to test IK resolve and how much independent foreign policy he will pursue is upon him. This visit will set the tone for the US Pakistan relations for the remaining 5 years.
On another note since the beginning of this relationship is already stained due to the controversial telephone call, my personal opinion is that Pompeo will be received with a cold shoulder.

They have a 2+2 meeting in India and USA is going to give some incentive to us for listening to them if not then India will have more pressure on them. This meeting will be interesting.

US is firmly in the Indian camp. This govt is conservative anti muslim. They don't like you whatever you do.

Their goal will be create headlines such as terrorism in pakistan bla bla bla. Just negative stuff which India does in the media. Imran needs to learn quickly you can't make friends with ideologically opposed nations.

What does need to happen is for Pakistan to close the NATO route and withdraw from the war. Only do otherwise if US make total assurance they will not put out negative press on Pakistan and for their partners do to the same. If they want ally treatment then they will have to give it back. With how Turkey have been treated I expect nothing but more malign and dine from US delegation.
