Why is the US funding higher education for its ‘Benedict Arnold ally’ Pakistan when the Pentagon is cutting tuition assistance for American troops?

That’s the question Rep Ted Poe, R-Texas, asked as he prepared to introduce a bill Tuesday to give Pakistan aid the ‘sequester’ treatment - halting the money until US tuition assistance is restored.

“Why are we funding education programs for our Benedict Arnold ally when we can’t fund - or don’t fund - the education for our military? And to Pakistan of all places, where hatred for America is at its highest. Washington should watch its spending and prioritise,” Poe said on the floor Monday. “It’s time, Mr Speaker, to sequester Pakistan.”

Poe is the latest congressional lawmaker to try and short-circuit the tuition assistance cuts, which the administration began to make in light of the sequester. Last week, Sens. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., and Kay Hagan, D-NC, also introduced an amendment to a budget bill to restore the program. Poe described the cost of the program as 0.1 per cent of the Defense Department’s budget, and one that has helped graduate 50,000 individuals.

He said the Marines spent roughly $47 million from the program last year — comparing that to the $12.7 million spent on higher education in Pakistan.

“And that’s not all,” Poe said. “Since the sequester, the administration has approved $37 million in foreign aid to Pakistan.” The figure on higher education aid represents just a fraction of the $47.2 million the US spent on education and social services aid to Pakistan in fiscal 2012.

The US spent a total of $370 million on all forms of aid to Pakistan that year - which also represents just a fraction of the total amount obligated.

The aid outrage is similar to that over $250 million in aid recently announced for Egypt.

Several branches of the military have pulled back on tuition assistance since the sequester took effect March 1.

The Marine Corps said in a statement last week that it is trying to preserve ‘essential programs’ and that leadership “remains committed to providing opportunities to Marines as they pursue their educational goals.”

“Education counselors are available to assist Marines with their education choices including providing information about other education programs,” the statement said, noting there are “other education funding options such as the GI Bills, grants, scholarships and loans that can support a broader continuum of learning and educational goals.”

To give or not to give is a question US needs to answer. It is unlikely the recipient shall say ' No" to whats coming.

Wonder how many know who Benedict Arnold was . Calling Pakistan Benedict Arnold is quite a slur.

My views.

For the love of God US, cut all aid to Pakistan and leave us the f- alone.
These people are worse than Indians, they have the power to stop the aid but keep crying like someone is forcing them to do it.

Well the Congressman has a valid grouse ; the sequester has badly hit Cornell and NSF, DARPA, DoD, ONR and Army grants to our group were almost reduced by a factor of 3, and conference allowances especially seem like a dream here. The situation with other Univs would be the same too by the look of it due to this damned sequester.

Then why Pakistan accept US money ? They also paid for repair of a dam in Pakistan. Accept it or not, US has provided much more aid than any other country.

Issue is, if that much aid has been given, then where has it gone ?? Why is there no visible improvement ?? Even with so much aid, why Pakistanis dislike America so much.

No one is forcing the US to give out aid, they do it themselves, they stopped the aid and put sanctions before also, what is stopping them now. Who is forcing them to pay out to others when they need the money for themselves the most.

Strange thing is, US is giving aid all around to world, but their own people living inside the US need money / aid / help the most. Even then i don't understand why they don't help their own and give out to others.

How did you make that "logical jump" ?
I know you guys are not very smart to begin with but even you must realize how dumb you sound by equating what I said to terrorists actions in Pakistan.

Pakistanis dislike America because of the double game Musharraf played for 10 years. He kept helping Americans, while showing the public that he is against America in the region. He tried milking two cows, but as we know it, it backfired.

Educated Pakistanis have no trouble with America.

If i was to decide, i would give Americans all the bases and help they would want in return for high-tech equipment, and tell the stupid awaam that this is in our interest.

After all that's what the Saudis, Jordanians, Egyptians,Bahraini,Qataris and Turkish have done.

What do you mean what is my logic for not taking aid? Are you really that dumb?
Taking aid is like taking a loan, you become subservient to your debtor. No aid means Pakistan is free to choose her destiny.

and the rest ?? If out of 100%, 50% goes for such works, where does the rest 50% go.

Musharaf played exactly how the Americans played us last time and this time. US was never sincere from the start, their coming to this region was and has been for some other purpose rather then eliminating terror.

Educated Pakistanis have trouble, its the educated ones with money and damn care whether Pakistan stays or not who have no issue with US and its policies.

And all those countries which you just quoted had something to offer and what they were offering US did needed it desperately. While in our case, they did not needed our help much.

I beg to differ. When America went into Afghanistan, they didn't go there for just a year or two. They were going to stay there for a long time. As we find out, it will be 13 years in 2014. Pakistan being their only option in this case, Pakistan had all it could offer. Musharraf could have easily given his landspace to Americans and presented to the population that America is our ally. He kept selling America his deals, like the drone strikes and all that while telling the public that drones are not allowed by us, blah blah all that bullshyt, when everyone knows that the same drones would fly from Pakistan airbases.
