ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif said on Wednesday US drone strikes are regrettable and must stop as they are a threat to the sovereignty and security of the country.

Speaking informally to the media at a reception after attending President Mamnoon Hussain’s address to a joint session of Parliament, the chief added that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is a national project and must be completed at any cost.

“The security situation in Karachi and Balochistan is improving,” said the army chief.

The COAS further said border management with Afghanistan is also improving, and now the responsibility lies with Aghanistan as there are fewer checkposts on the other side.

“Operation Zarb-i-Azb is underway across the country and failure is not an option for us,” said Sharif, adding that the successes gained so far in the operation would be consolidated.

“We have to maintain the victories of Operation Zarb-i-Azb. Terrorists will not be allowed to re-enter into areas cleared in South Waziristan and North Waziristan.”

The army chief and president also discussed issues of national security at length. The reception was also attended by JI chief Sirajul Haq, Akrami Durrani of JUI-F, Special Adviser for Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and cabinet ministers, including Ishaq Dar.

President Mamnoon Hussain addressed the Parliament in a joint session on Wednesday to mark a new year in Parliament, discussing national security and foreign policy.

The session was also attended by the chiefs of the army, navy, and air force.

and who is gonna stop them? a farmer? a shopkeeper? a milkman? a laborer? . either stop the drone through strong diplomacy (politicians) or shoot the damn drone (military). if both of them fail to do their jobs then they should pack their bags and go home.

. .
He should be careful of what he says or his words will become hollow and won't carry any weight. In this case, another drone strike during his time as COAS will accomplish just that. Either don't issue any statements or don't let let American drone into Pakistan.

.
If situation is getting out of hand, Pakistan should consider raising this issue in the UN.

Afghan Talis are threat to Afghan and American interests, while the Afghans are too weak to go after them, the US is too strong for Pakistan to shoot down their drones. Housing Talis who kill Afghans daily brings hatred from Afghans but it brings drones from the US.

I think Pakistani establishment has two options, failing to follow any of these will render the statements of COAS hollow like civilian politicians.

- Shoot down American drones, shoot any other US planes and personal that cross border into Pakistan and mark US as a hostile nation.

or

- Change policies vis-a-vis Afghan Talis and other groups, kick them out of Pakistan and stop assisting them. It will put an end to the problems with the US, Afghanistan etc.

I think both the Pakistani public and the international community is too smart to fall for this game of playing both sides, because at the end of it brings one embarrassing episode after another to Pakistan. OBL, Mullah Omar, Mullah Mansoor etc.

I am afraid once ISI decides to go ahead with something then they rarely change their strategies or back out just because someone else told them so . ISI is not even answerable to the government . It's arguably the most powerful spy agency in the world with alot of power, Money and influence . America knows ISI has been double crossing them for a long time. I would advise you to see BBC documentary '' The secret Pakistan '' . American congress , CIA and every top american officials know ISI is working against their interests but they are forced to deal with it because they cannot go to war with a nuclear power . Their top officials have accused ISI of killing their soldiers and bombing their bases in afghanistan . End result ? Nothing ISI went unscathed because it can afford to do that .

If it was any other country USA would have invaded it long ago but it can't so it's playing the cat and mouse drone games with the permission of our government .

Once nato moves out of Afghanistan the afghan government is to weak to stand on its legs for long . Just have a look at the fighting in helmand . Almost all the province is about to fall to the taliban . Once American troops leave here , taliban are going to take over again . We cannot afford another hostile force .

General sahib you have both the weaponry and national support to stop them if you really wanted

- Intelligence agencies should be answerable to the elected government otherwise you have a state within a state.

- Can you point any return on investment by this "sophisticated" game played by ISI, the only thing I see it being
humiliated by the US, by droning your country and not taking Pakistani borders seriously.

- The US doesn't have to go war with a nuclear Pakistan on the contrary that the last thing they want to have is a failing Pakistani state with nuclear weapons in the hands folks like Zaid Hamid aka lal topi

- I don't think US will leave or stay in Afghanistan based on the wishes of Afghans or Pakistanis, they will do what is in their interest, for now our interest converge and thus we want them to stay for now.

/Peace

-This video is for your first point . Major Amir from ISI enlightening us . Notice his points about afghanistan .

- Well then USA has to wait for a long time because Pakistan sure as hell is not failing anytime soon . I would say Pakistan and its intelligence agencies are too shrewd for them . 200 million strong people , 25th largest economy cannot fail by the grace of god .:) . As for Drones , well if they allege we kill their soldiers in afghanistan then tit for tat .

yet another video of how Pakistan has played USA all this while . This time Indians are accepting that .

- Pakistan is a big regional power in the region and has its own strategic goals . Just watch some of the you tube videos of american defence analysts and intelligence men and see their analysis of how they are fed up of Pakistan and their double games . It's really good they are getting a good dose of their own medicine .

.
US is not in the position to justify the legitimacy of its unilateral attacks inside Pakistan because they constitute as breach of sovereignty of a nation (not officially hostile to the US) according to UN charter.

UN is the correct forum to raise this issue in, this move will demonstrate that Pakistan is really serious about violations of its sovereignty time and again. We can seek China's endorsement in this regard as well.

Now, of-course, there is a possibility that we loose US as a market as a consequence of the above.

All right but if you hear Ahmed Rashid, Hussain Haqqani and other writers all you get is that ISI has actually done more harm than good to Pakistan.

Seems to paint a different picture of Major Amir.

I think things are moving the way they were supposed to. No surprise here. It is just an epilogue to what is to come. Pak US relations are going to get far worse and mainly by US doing.
On a bigger picture India is US 'strategic depth' against China as is Afghanistan for Pakistan or India(depending who is ruling NA or Taliban) so there is no higher moral ground for US or anyone. It is about how best these countries can outmanoeuvre each other.

India needs to understand US is an Ocean away unscathed from any possible future conflict. The only way forwardand to break this chain lies with India. China and Pakistan are willing to cooperate for regional association.

NATO is at war against Pakistan: 4th generation. It is an indirect war but war nonetheless. NATO will never leave willingly; she has a mission to achieve.
