Nobody saw it coming. Certainly none of the worshippers gathered for Fajir (morning) prayer on Thursday at the local mosque in northwest Pakistan.

“Drone strikes are like that, they literally come out of nowhere…death from above”, said one military official at Mac Connell Air Force base, speaking on the condition of absolute secrecy.

“Now, any way you cut it the US has another huge public relations mess on its hands, he said.

Mosques are houses of worship where Muslims gather to pray and worship Allah (God) and can best be thought of in terms of “Islamic churches”, said one Imam in Kansas City, Missouri, who declined to be named in this report.

“It is like attacking a church of Sunday worshippers…”, said one intelligence analyst. “Whether it is legitimate or not this will appear as a direct attack on Islam”, the analyst warned.

Here is what we know so far:

AT LEAST TWO MISSILES FIRED

"The drone fired two missiles and hit the village mosque where a number of people were offering Fajr (morning) prayer," local tribal elder Roashan Din told NBC News.

BESIDES THE MOSQUE A HOUSE WAS ALSO TARGETED

Besides the mosque was located in the Hasukhel area of Mir Ali in North Waziristan, US also targeted a house of suspected militants.

AS MANY AS 4 UNMANNED SPY PLANNED WERE USED

During the missile attack as many as 4 spy planes were spotted, most likely Predator drones, although the US military will not confirm that however.

Another eyewitness reported: "The drone fired two missiles and pounded a house," a local administration official in Mir Ali told NBC News.

Officials told Reuters that a pilotless aircraft fired the two missiles, although the news agency described the targeted structure as a "compound."

Doctors at the Mir Ali hospital reported “six wounded” had been brought in. Among those wounded, at least one person died and four others were in critical condition. It is unknown if any women and children were killed in the attack.

“This can’t be good from a PR (Public Relations) perspective. Anytime a mosque is hit, people will be asking a lot of questions as to the reasons and necessity of blowing up a Mosque during prayer service”, said one US soldier serving in Afghanistan in an email communication via facebook.

In order to protect that soldier, his identity is not being released.

Well like to know if the mosque was used for militant activity. They would have seem something.

They were "suspected" militants.

Mosques are a place of worship, not a place for militants to gather. Regardless of whether the people killed were actually militants or not, I do not support the bombing of places of worship which are very important to the masses.

Seems like operation gone wrong...btw RIP

Now that sucks! If a church had been destroyed by Pakistanis, the US and the West would have gone to town lambasting them for hurting the religious sentiments of the Christians, but destroy places of worship themselves without batting an eye! Jeeez!

The target hit by the U.S. drones is a mosque instead of a house, said the report quoting local residents.

Two missiles were fired at the mosque when people were leaving after early morning prayers, it said, adding that many of the killed and injured were civilians.

The report also said that it was the first time that the U.S. drones targeted a mosque and the mosque was destroyed in the attack.

Rescue work was delayed due to fear of more strikes as five U.S. drones were seen hovering over the area following the strike, said the report.

Well this is bad. Btw is there any other news paper reporting this?

5 drones ??? Man your government and army making fool of people

if a mosque is used for militant activity and the government of Pakistan is not willing to act in NW, exactly what option is left?

Mosques are clearly places that militants gather. To say otherwise is to be either naive or an apologist for these jihadis.

There are thousands of Mosques in North America. Do militants gather there too?

How would you feel if a church was demolished with Christian worshipers inside the church?

And to ignore the many innocents that visit these mosques and simply bomb it without any sort of proof that militancy is being promoted, is an ignorant thing to do.
