Hundreds of US troops seal NWA border

Updated 1 hour ago

Malik Mumtaz Khan & Mushtaq Yusufzai:
MIRAMSHAH/PESHAWAR: The United States shifted hundreds of its troops to the Afghan area bordering North Waziristan on Sunday along with heavy arms and gunship helicopters and sealed the Pak-Afghan border for all types of movement.

Tribesmen living in the border areas said Afghan and US authorities had clamped a curfew in the Gurbaz area of Afghanistan’s Khost province and started house-to-house searches. The abrupt deployment of US forces near the border area with Pakistan has escalated tension in the militancy-plagued North Waziristan tribal region as US forces immediately sealed the main Ghulam Khan-Khost highway for traffic. This stranded more than 900 loaded trucks, including those carrying Nato consignments, and passenger vehicles the whole day.

Pakistani security officials and tribal sources in Ghulam Khan area said US forces had arrived there during the night between Saturday and Sunday and occupied nearby hilltops and established observation posts. Sources said US forces had set up a huge military base across the border and shifted gunship helicopters, heavy tanks, long-range artillery guns and other heavy weapons to the border area. The villagers in Ghulam Khan said Nato warplanes were also seen flying over the border region several times during the day. Tribal elders of the Gurbaz tribe inhabiting both sides of the Durand Line said US forces had clamped a curfew in Tarkhobi area and asked villagers to stay at home. They also claimed that US and Afghan forces had launched house-to-house search but were clueless about any arrests made during the search operation.

The elders said the Gurbaz tribe is living on both sides of the border and the tribespeople easily cross the border whenever required or in emergency situations. They said many of their relatives, fearing clashes in Gurbaz, had been trying to flee their homes and villages for North Waziristan, but were not able to do so as the border has been sealed and curfew en forced.

Pakistani security officials in North Waziristan confirmed the latest development and said they were monitoring the situation on the border with Afghanistan. However, they did not want to publicly comment on the closing of the Pak-Afghan border by US forces, which caused traffic jams on the Pakistani side of the border.

Government functionaries in Miramshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan, said more than 900 heavy loaded vehicles carrying various items to Afghanistan had been stranded on the Ghulam Khan road. Tribesmen in North Waziristan were concerned about the arrival of US forces at their doors, but vowed to render every sacrifice for the defence of their homeland in case foreign troops crossed over into Pakistan.

However, they said they did not expect US forces to cross the border to enter Pakistani territory. “It will be a blunder on their part if the Americans enter North Waziristan,” said a noted tribal chieftain, Malik Mamoor Khan, in Miramshah. Another tribal elder, Malik Nasrullah Khan, said Waziristan was the land of brave and peace-loving tribespeople and they would never allow any outside power to invade it.

US troops massed on Pak's Waziristan border

Islamabad: The US has moved hundreds of new troops to the Afghan area bordering Pakistan's insurgent-infested North Waziristan tribal region along with heavy artillery, helicopter gunships and sealed movement on the border.
According to local media reports, US forces deployed to new positions in the border areas facing Ghulam Khan in Pakistan between Saturday and Sunday night.

The troops occupied nearby vantage heights on hilltops, setting up observation posts, The News International said quoting Pakistani security officials and tribal elders.

Geo television reported that tribesmen living in the border areas said Afghan and US authorities had clamped a curfew in parts of Afghanistan's eastern Khost province and started house-to-house search.
The villagers in Ghulam Khan said NATO warplanes were also seen flying over the border region several times during the day.
The News reported that the abrupt deployment of US forces near the border area with Pakistan had escalated tension in the militancy-plagued North Waziristan tribal region as US forces immediately sealed the main road connecting Pakistan border town of Ghulam Khan and Khost for traffic.

Pakistani security officials in North Waziristan confirmed the latest development and said they were monitoring the situation on the border with Afghanistan, The News reported.

There is no word from the US and NATO forces on the Pakistani media reports.

The American troop movement has been reported as US unmanned spy planes have stepped up strikes in the Waziristan tribal belt over the past few days. Washington has said that North Waziristan is a haven for members of the Haqqani network.

Washington Post quoting US officials has said that US has opened a new more aggressive approach towards the dreaded Haqqani network.

"The Obama administration has launched the opening salvos of a new, more aggressive approach towards an Afghan insurgent group it asserts is supported by Pakistan's government," the report said.

The post quoted officials as saying that the new operation may include intensified drone strikes on Miranshah, centre of North Waziristan and was made "at a National Security Council meeting chaired by President Obama two weeks ago."
It is intended to 'send a signal' that the United States would no longer tolerate a safe haven for the most lethal enemy of US forces in Afghanistan, or Pakistan' s backing for it, the paper said.

Military options debated at the September 29 meeting were set aside for now, including the possibility of a ground operation against Haqqani leaders similar to the raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May.

Although the administration has left the raid option on the table, the potential negatives of such an operation -- including the possible collapse of Pakistan's military leadership and civilian government -- are seen as far outweighing its benefits.

Considering that the Pakistan Army has repeatedly refused to take action against the Haqqani group based in the AFPAK region, and which is responsible for killing American troops, they probably had no other choice than to deploy their troops along the border to prevent such attacks emanating from Pakistan.

It's quite likely that this U.S. deployment could inevitably result in Pak-U.S. clashes which could spiral out of control. And that's bad news!

1. Haqqani is a hoax/disinfo created by US Intel to establish an excuse to pounce on Pakistan.

2. In the face of the anticipated assault all Pakistanis - whether Taliban/terrorist or whatever color, will be united. This will in fact be a boon for Pakistan which has been seeking national unity in the face of aggression.

3. Will India take advantage? This is an issue which Pak leaders must be taking up with natural allies in the Ummah and China.

Describing China and Pakistan miltary past action against India does not help to contribute to the thread.

Stop Trolling.

Nothing will happen might be US is interested in finding how Pakistan will react

usa is getting closer to its end day by day ....

public pressure in Pakistan is building against usa and their puppets in Pak gov cant help in future .... Pak army is also on its final help line so things will change now ... depends on usa how they want to handle it....

when Pakistan will react, US and NATO will not like it and they know it :)
I agree that they(NATO,ISAF) must seal the border so that they will realize that they were wrong in their every approach but they must understand that Pakistan is not in mood of any thing funny .

This news is incorrect.

Please study the terrain before commentating.

It takes hunderends of troops just to keep an artillery battery charged up and firing.

Hundreds of troops will do nothing to seal the border,
it will takes in the order of thousands to patrol the border, or offer any form of resistance should the tribals choose to have a close quarter skirmish.

My assessment is that this is a small cautious step forward, the US will start to build up force in that area and watch Pakistan's reaction.

Pakistan has the Joker card in this, because the USA will never let things get to the meltdown.

American War tactics are very different from Pakistan India War style. American first try to destroy through Airstrikes (use Airforce). They never ever entered nor put their Army close to the country where US interested to attack.

When Airforce damage maximum ground facility of the under attack country then they send their forces through air (C17, C130 and other Military movement transport) planes. After when their partroops got maximum control or at least control major points then US send forces through ground level (Tanks ground forces etc).

I don't believe that American ground military is capable to fight like Pakistan and Indian forces... Americans far behind ground battle war/tactics/use of infantry with ground battle groups. PAK/INDIA ahead on this. We are much well trained in terrain especially mountainee terrain battles. That is why US lost the war in Afghanistan because they used maximum Airforce but they didn't get the required results. They destroyed civilian population that's it. They they make points in Kandahar and other major places through paratroops first. but when they entered forces into Afghanistan Taliban's hitem hard! and why ?

American's don't know how to fight on tough mountainee terrain!

About American attack... not possible many things are involve supply, food, routes, everything from Pakistan also tough terrain with 2,000,00 military on the border + missiles ... many things are involve its not easy to attack on such country.

They will avoid a close range battle at all costs.
Decorating coffins is not some thing any one can afford, most of all USA.
Thus the long range doctrine.
