An influential US daily has hailed India's new laws against sexual violence , saying the "political system can respond to an urgent popular demand for change", and wondered if the US political system would respond the same way to the massacre of innocent children at an elementary school.

"India has a reputation as a place where needed government action comes slowly, if it all," noted the Washington Post's Editorial Board in an editorial titled "India's government, impelled to action on rape."

"This fault is often blamed on the country's democracy, which is said to be ineffective compared to the authoritarian regimes of China or Russia."

However, on Sunday the Cabinet, it noted, ratified a landmark package of laws dealing with sexual violence, just 56 days after the brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old woman on a New Delhi bus.

"The reforms fall short of what is needed and must be seen only as the beginning of a struggle to protect women from rape, trafficking and other abuses," the Post said. "But they also demonstrate why India's political system can respond in a way unthinkable in Beijing or Moscow."

"India has nevertheless shown how its political system can respond to an urgent popular demand for change," the Post said suggesting that the same could certainly not be said of China or Russia.

"As for the United States, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings occurred two days before the New Delhi rape; whether our political system will respond to the subsequent outcry remains to be seen," the daily said.

Well Delhi Rape defamed India but the protest that followed and political and judicial actions has made an example of power of people in the world.

People many times laugh at Largest Democracy but this is perfect example to show how much power Indian people have.

Every protest and every single message has brought a much needed change. But work is not over. Successful implementation of law and increasing security of women is yet to be achieved.

We can curse or we can make change. I would rather be at latter side. Hope we all think this way.

Blame is on voters for electing wrong leaders. Politicians come from same region we live in. To make a change, we have to work considering decades.

Social media gives you a chance to express your views and bombard people with messages of being proactive.

I was in protest from 1st day. And if people thinks that political power has shown some some stand with people, then they are wrong. HM compared protesters with naxalites. No comment came from government side. No leader came to meet.
People saw that Sonia met some students who were protesting. But They don't know they were NSUI wing people.
If protester went violent then it is because of political people to break the protests. They block all metro station to stop people to reach main place.
Watch any news show, Police manipulate the death of constable. Delhi minister even don't know about her department.

Rest every single part of your post is true. Every protest delivers a message. and to bring change, we should be ready to fight for decades.

@arav Buddy I have been involved in this cause even before the Delhi Rape. We had one problem that people may forget this case. But somehow the protest is still simmering.

But we have to be careful as in case of Patiala, the girl framed few people to take revenge. Innocent may e targeted. That's why we should allow Judiciary to take all the cases into account, the actual crime and false reported crime.

We need to go step by step otherwise we might fail. First get a basic change in the law. And then move to next step of enforcing and proposing more changes.

People who talks on social media, don't go for voting. They don't go for protests.

Media ( specially English media ) is covered by congress, just look at their major editor, directors, they all have link with congress.

Look at Government how they are taking actions against arvind, ramdev, hazare.

Give people to reject candidate, then only we can see good people. Even some people get elected by fair voting. Political parties ll make agreement to make government.
Thing is we can not expect change in short time, We have to fight daily to do it. We are fighting against a very strong system. We are just an ant. Hope so, we ll bring some better change.

You will be happy to know that more youth are moving to volunteer in many organizations and especially in spread of education.

Problem is that Media is not giving that much coverage. So, Social Media may have to kick in.
