US concerned on killings in Pakistan

WASHINGTON: The United States on Thursday voiced concern over extrajudicial killings and religious intolerance in Pakistan, including in its troubled southwestern province of Balochistan.

In an annual report on human rights, the State Department said that the “most serious human rights problems” in Pakistan included extrajudicial killings, torture and disappearances by both security forces and militants.

“Lack of government accountability remained a pervasive problem. Abuses often went unpunished, fostering a culture of impunity,” it said.

In presenting the report, senior US official Mike Posner also highlighted an uptick in violations of religious freedom, including through controversial anti-blasphemy laws, as well as violence in Balochistan.

“We’re very concerned about the violence in Balochistan. We’re concerned about the effects of those who’ve challenged some of the laws, like the blasphemy law,” said Posner, the assistant secretary of state for human rights.

Posner raised the case of Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman sentenced to death in November 2010 for alleged blasphemy.

Assassins last year killed Salman Taseer, the governor of the central province of Punjab, and Shahbaz Bhatti, the minister for minority affairs, who both defended Bibi and sought reforms.

In her own remarks on the report, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did not name Pakistan but voiced concern over the treatment of religious minorities including the Ahmadi community.

The State Department report also accounted allegations of rights violations in Balochistan, a highly sensitive issue for Pakistan.

The report, based largely on accounts by rights groups and officials, said that disappearances in Balochistan “remained a problem” with the mutilated bodies of 355 missing people found between June 2010 and December 2011.

Baluch rebels rose up in 2004, demanding political autonomy and a greater share of profits from oil, gas and mineral resources in the region. The unrest comes as the United States an Pakistan focus on Islamic extremism in lawless areas on the Afghan border.

The State Department report also said that prison conditions were “extremely poor” in Pakistan, with accounts of torture, sexual abuse, overcrowding, inadequate food and medical care, and discrimination against minority inmates.

And who is the US to say all this?

I can see this as a excuse to do some meddling in Balochistan by the US.

A lot of the issues raised in this article really do exist. Concern shown by the United States could coerce our government in to tackling these issues.

I was seeing a video of Nazam Sethi where he mentioned that the Baluchistan Police have recorded evidence of kidnapping done by FC and they have presented in the court. The court has shown great concerns about the situation but yeah some people will try to put things under the carpet.

"Nazam" sethi is such a great man
I wish he also shows the report of the kidnapping and killing by the BLA terrorists or would he justify them as a reasonable reaction? did the Balochistan police recover any evidence of the killings of its own officers on regular bases by the BLA? or did he mention that during the commercial break and you missed it?

re American concern

did they blink an eye over the massacre in Bahrain? the ruling party encouraged by American indifference even went after the doctors and medics who were blamed to be terrorist supporters because they attended the wounded.

the parking space for the 5th fleet in Bahrain means that the price for raising similar concern is too high

Ah... super powers and their moral standards

Too much hype over a simple report.
And so many countries have human rights issues. It's not limited to Pakistan only.

when women fake orgasms, they feel at least something. when anglo-americans fake concerns for pakistan...

.
Pakistan is concerned over human rights violation by US army in Iraq and Afghanistan.
US army is involved in killing thousands of innocent afghans and also involved in human rights violation in Guantanamo

. .
US has killed more Pakistanis via drone attacks then the total number of Pakistanis killed extra judicially since 2000.

The same drones where PA helped US setup drone control centers and provided airstrips.
The same drones where ISI provided intelligence.

When something good happens please show up for getting credit and for all discredit blame it on USA.

Meanwhile in Waziristan and FATA

USA concerned on killings in Pakistan

Drone attacks started because Pakistan created the safe heavens for terrorist. Drones have been very effective weapons in killing terrorist.

Of course the USA is more likely to place its own interests first. That's just how it is for most countries. As for Bahrain; there are just way too many opposing views regarding what exactly happened there. I know both Sunni & Shia Bahrainis; the Sunnis support their government while Shias usually don't. As for the doctors, it's claimed that some of the doctors used to smear blood on the patients' wounds to make the injury look more severe for the camera. All of this is very debatable of course, but I don't want to be the one to divert the topic.

It's a known fact that lawlessness is a major issue in Pakistan at the moment & due to these terrorist attacks the lives of many innocent people is at risk too. I think that the US government may be able to force our own corrupt government to act. Pakistan has to be careful at the moment & not give foreign powers any chance for more accusations regarding human rights violations or lawlessness, etc. That will further tarnish our image & reputation world wide, the government & the people themselves need to be more vigilant.

Some people claimed that the US itself has violated human rights. That might be true, but they have tried to stop their own people from violating human rights many times as well. Besides, human rights are given a lot of importance in places such as the USA & Europe; they have managed to guard the rights of their own populations quite well.

Chor machaey shore, We demand us must pay price for killing thousands of innocents in our beautiful country

Well you refused to do it in NW. Also if you did not liked it why you allowed them to setup drone operating centers and provide them info.

You guys are complaining about drones when relationship became sour
