US, China Vow to Improve Cooperation

China's envoy is quite uncomfortable , it seems.

If you studied carefully, Xi only declared winged words, like aggression gene not in Chinese blood, ... and so so.
He wanna be a good image, a Peace Nobel Prize, i guess ...

Sure Xi is jealous America can get peace prize for bombing countless countries. :jester:

I view this as the fundamental difference, and almost everything else can be overcome with diplomacy. Based on my discussions with Chinese users here, China simply does not believe the US when it says it takes no position on the territorial issues of the SCS. The revealing part is the bit about "establishing rules for settling the disputes." The US loves nothing more than stability and predictability, as we have proven with our not so glorious support of dictators in the past few decades. If China is somehow able to assure the US that no matter what happens in the SCS, it won't disrupt trade flows or spiral out of control into a regional conflagration, I think you'll see our relationship improve rapidly.
The problem with you is that you use double standard against us. When Japan nationalizing a dispute island, not single words came out from you. When Japan defended its territorial integrity, you showed complete support. However when we defended our territorial integrity at Paracel, you immediately called us imposing "unilateral action". When the Philippines flesh its navy muscle trying to arrest our fisherman in dispute area, which under DOC is not allowed, and instead of focusing on that specific incident that spark the stand off, you immediately nailed us as the aggressor and initiator of the stand off. I think you need to look at yourself in the mirror and ask why there is constant mistrust between our two nations.

As far as trade flow, we have as much incentive to keep its free flow. Hello? Trade is good for us, for the both of us! It is these little petty Vietnamese that threaten to block Malacca Strait to boost their leverage in our dispute with them. You should worry about them.

I view the Diaoyu/Senkakus as different from Paracels, since the US captured Diaoyu from Japan, so it wasn't out of the ordinary for the US to return it to Japan. Over the same period of time that Japan held Diaoyu, China was actively contesting control of Paracels, so it has a much stronger diplomatic case for the Paracels.

I can't speak to the Philippines and fishermen issue, as I am not well informed of the situation. I thought China engaged in exactly the same behavior, though, which would make the Philippines' action more understandable.

In any case, as I was writing in another thread, China should be more proactive in explaining to the American public its position on the issue. Right now, it's easy for Americans to understand the case for supporting Japan, or the Philippines, or whomever: they will offer us an alliance, and possibly bases. China will never offer the US an alliance--you and other Chinese users have made that clear. It's always easier to be friends with someone that wants to be your friend than someone who wants to be your rival.

That said, I admit that the US could approach the situation with a better diplomatic solution, or at least a more quiet diplomatic solution so as not to push China into a corner through public statements.

In Washington, the US Congressional Research Service said China’s assertive posture in the China seas has heightened concerns that ongoing disputes over these waters could lead to a crisis or conflict with neighbors the Philippines, Japan and Vietnam.

And the United States could be drawn into the conflict as a result of obligations it has under bilateral security treaties with Japan and the Philippines, it said in a report.

The risk of military escalation is generating bad blood between Washington and Beijing that could torpedo cooperation on important global issues including the Middle East, climate change and nuclear proliferation, The Washington Post said in its Tuesday edition.

US efforts to bolster ties with regional states such as Vietnam and to reassure nervous Asian allies such as Japan and the Philippines that it stands ready to defend them militarily have created a new narrative in Beijing – that the United States has encouraged China’s neighbors to push their maritime claims more aggressively, the daily said.

A rival narrative taking place in Washington is that China is intent on pushing its territorial claims through the threat of military force and that it ultimately wants to push the United States out of Asia.

Christopher Johnson, the CIA’s former top China analyst now with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Beijing would be wrong to underestimate the US commitment to defend Asia.

“America is a sleeping giant and if you prod us too hard, we are going to mobilize,” he said.

Does China never catch other countries fishermen before?
illegal Chinese fishermen caught wild animals are not allowed. We agree the Phil act to catch them.
Block Malacca, is it statement of Vietnam, or you bring here some around joking as official statement of Vietnam govt ?
Why USA must worry about those jokes ?

We accepted an agreement to shield the dispute for future generation to resolve. That's why it was not contest actively until until 2012 when Japan changed that status quo. For Paracel, we control 100% for 30 years. What the difference?

Same behavior? Fishermen fished there for years without any issue. Suddenly the Phillipines started to make an arrest. So we responded more aggressively. In fact, this started by you making a big "Pivot to Asia" announcement which caused these little claimants to make their move before we got too strong. So they use you as a leverage before it's too late.

When we explain, do the American public ever listen? As big country, as you know, will always be at a disadvantage when in dispute with smaller country. We want equal partner which mean equal partner alliance. Not a master and puppet relationship.

We never catch any fisherman at Spratly. At Paracel, there is no dispute because we control everything.

You not only catch our fishermen but killing our fishermen by hit their boat to sink in daylight.
No sorry? so shame ...

Your double standards : Chinese PRC never ever put a foot to Taiwan, Taiwanese control 100% for centuries. Same to Senkaku. So as you "no dispute" ??
They even didn't need to kill any PRC / Chinese person on those.

You killed our men to rob Paracels and no one all over the world agreed that's yours. Never ever Paracels in no dispute. even 1000 years later

You Viet needs to learn and understand that you cannot challenge a big power without consequence. You are trying to impose your will and strength on us by harassing. We respond. It is that simple.

Again, no dispute at Paracel no matter what you said. It is not a dispute.

all in record, no matter what you said ...
Wow, even Phillipines could challenge your power.

Did you ever see any Treaty similar to Treaty of Shimonoseki between Vietnam and China?
Vietnam is always in position to confront China aggression.
