It became the symbol of half a dozen US military interventions – a vehicle instantly recognizable across the globe, and as popular with the US military (if not with the actual soldiers) as with Islamic State, who stole 2,300 of them in Iraq during the fall of Mosul in 2014.

Now the US Department of Defense has announced the beginning of the end for the ubiquitous Humvee, awarding a $6.7bn contract to replace it to the Wisconsin firm Oshkosh.

As the Sherman tank was indelibly associated with the second world war, the Humvee bracketed a period of US interventionism that began with the invasion to topple Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega in 1989 and will end in the chaos of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Oshkosh beat a team made up of Lockheed Martin Corp and Britain’s BAE Systems, as well as AM General, the privately owned company that built the original Humvees, for a deal that could be worth $30bn over time.

The US plans to buy a total of 55,000 of the Oshkosh’s Joint Light Tactical Vehicles, or JLTVs, to start replacing the current combined fleet of about 140,000 Humvees. The makers claim the new vehicles will be more nimble and better protected than their 30-year-old predecessors.

Pakistan Army has open Jeeps and trucks for their army , which has resulted in very high casualties ,IED blasts , Ambushes , Rocket attacks etc . Pakistan army needs new Jeeps which are bullet proof and could take care of an IED or attack . This is the best chance for the Pakistan army to get hands on the Humvee's ,They could be really useful in the operations in the northern areas ..

. .
Why don't you guys buy anything new ever? All second hand stuff always.
THe humvees will be standing in the junkyards and would be broken down in to small pieces , or they would be auctioned , Its a good chance for us to give our soldiers some protection .

Agreed, but pa gee we have already in stock but we are not using,we are using these toyota trucks, might be because they are fast and cost effective.even these truck we can locally can cover them after little basic modification like adding one more layer.but it all depend on big guys

.
It's an a .6 million strong army you are talking about!

Second hand humvees? Have you ever thought of the issues that will arise ?

Second hand vehicles are prone with problems.
2)Logistical nightmare.
3)Gas guzzlers
4)Too costly
5)Only uparmoured vehicles can survive 7.62... None can survive RPG or IEDs.

-----

Smarter solution ... Add more $$$ and buy Arnoured SUVs being marketed by both HIT & private sector!

Sir but we can get the Vehicles which are in a goof form and new , In small numbers such as 1000 -1500 , they will help the army to move in Operational areas , they are much better than those toyota jeeps which have no protection even the machine gun operator is vulnerable in those Toyota vehicles

.
Regardless of the condition those Humvees are in, their fuel-economy makes them a burden for our Armed forces. The US Army can pay billions to keep these machines running, we can't.

.
If US has plans to give them out then Pakistan should approach US & make a request to acquire the goodies they need for PA.

.
Pakistan should get those old Humvees. They are worth it. Most of the second hand stuff is not used as badly. Also, Americans have a good record of maintaining their equipment.

.
Humvees the origional have been proven to be useless , in Afghanistan the newer models perhaps are good addition

.
Americans have good record of maintenance because They can tbrow billions of dollars.at them.

As for pak gettung them Im sure you wil say can we take them for free.

Why not some ekses scrap is your gold

.
For more than 1000 trucks, we can setup a manufacturing plant in Pakistan! no need to buy them in bulk

.
Humvees are giant fuel eating machines and we should stop acting like third world country please give us your used ones stop this nonsense forever we have the capabilities to build such vehicles in HIT with less fuel consumption.

Pakistan even may get them for free, will just have to pay for shipping and upgrades, still cheaper than buying brand new vehicles.

Where is this money going to come from? It seems Pakistan has a long shopping list -- SU-35s, submarines, surface ships, attack helicopters, etc.
