The US Pacific Fleet commander said on Thursday he would launch a nuclear strike against China next week if President Donald Trump ordered it, and warned against the military ever shifting its allegiance from its commander in chief.

Admiral Scott Swift was responding to a hypothetical question at an Australian National University security conference following a major joint US- Australian military exercise off the Australian coast. The drills were monitored by a Chinese intelligence-gathering ship off northeast Australia.

Asked by an academic in the audience whether he would make a nuclear attack on China next week if Trump ordered it, Swift replied: “The answer would be: yes.”

“Every member of the US military has sworn an oath to defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic and to obey the officers and the president of the United States as commander and chief appointed over us,” Swift said.

“This is core to the American democracy and any time you have a military that is moving away from a focus and an allegiance to civilian control, then we really have a significant problem,” he said.

Pacific Fleet spokesman Captain Charlie Brown later said Swift’s answer reaffirmed the principle of civilian control over the military.

“The admiral was not addressing the premise of the question, he was addressing the principle of civilian authority of the military,” Brown said. “The premise of the question was ridiculous.”

The biennial Talisman Saber exercise involved 36 warships including the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, 220 aircraft and 33,000 military personnel.

It was monitored by a Chinese People’s Liberation Army-Navy Type 815 Dongdiao-class auxiliary general intelligence vessel from within Australia’s 200-mile exclusive economic zone.

Swift said China had similarly sent an intelligence ship into the US exclusive economic zone around Hawaii during the Pacific Fleet-hosted multinational naval exercise in 2014.

China had a legal right to enter the American economic zone for military purposes under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea – or UNCLOS – which defines the rights and responsibilities of nations sailing the world’s oceans, he said.

Governments needed to engage with Beijing to understand why the Chinese did not accept that the United States had the same access rights within China’s exclusive economic zone, Swift said.

“The dichotomy in my mind is why is there a different rules-set applied with respect to taking advantage of UNCLOS in other EEZs, but there’s this perspective that there’s a different rules-set that applies within another nation’s EEZ? ” Swift said.

china will respond it by nuking u.s using df41 icbm and jl2 slbm.it will be suicidal for u.s

You're also missing the point. With Trump's erratic behavior, there's been a concern that US military brass wouldn't follow an order from the President due to objections. This is just a confirmation that Admiral Scott Swift wouldn't disobey an order from the President. The question could have been posed with Lesotho, Panama, Russia, or the Vatican and the message would still be valid.

Ideally military brass shouldn't play politics, and Admiral Scott Swift is confirming, at least for him, that he wont let his views, politics or standpoint come between an order and his command. However, there are times when a military or political leader shouldn't obey an order.

It's also worth noting the US threshold for using nuclear weapons is high, second strike only. There were discussions post-9/11 about using tactical nuclear weapons against Afghanistan, but due to a commitment to a no first use policy, that wasn't carried out. If the US used nuclear weapons against another country it would only be after the US was struck by a nuclear device.

U.S would not nuke China, common sense.

It would take a nuclear strike against the US to render the US willing to use one of its own. Common sense or policy, but that's how it'd go.

Professionalism aside, he could have worded it less provocatively. Not nice to say that about another country.

China has not developed them in large numbers and American defenses have considerably improved at strategic level in recent years. Therefore, MAD aspect between these two states may not be.

Nonetheless, nuclear strikes are a terrifying prospect and such talks should not happen in press.

One would expect this level of commander has certain level of communication acumen when commenting on public. His response could be that he follows president/political decision, whatever that may be. This US general who happens to be commander of pacific fleet; him making such explicit comment actually showcase US as warmongering state in desperation. If anything, underline frustration of US military not being able to challenge China as before 9say 3 years back) clarified. In conventional military term, US no longer has overwhelming edge over China. So, desperate nuclear options are taunted without considering MAD. US general public is more or less hostage to fake mainstream media and have no clue how their politicians, elites and generals are plying with their life. Come MAD scenario, they sure will have something to say about it or simply accept the fate.

this is just frustration.any action will result an equal reaction.china already have radars to detect f-22.american dictatorship is already over.china is the rising power in Asia and most importantly, china is friend of russia so america is feeling isolation.

China has deployed at least four brigades of the DF-41. Such brigade consists 12 TELs with 24 missiles. That's totally 96 DF-41 ICBMs in account, and each DF-41 possesses at least 10 MIRVed warheads. Furthermore, China got many more variants from the DF-31 family, not mentioning the good ole DF-5 family. Also, the JL-2 and the coming JL-3 as China's cornerstone of the naval deterrence. It is only in your pipe dream that China cannot achieve the MAD status.

Stupid Question.
Admiral Scott Swift would be real dumb if he answered otherwise.
He cannot even be seen to hesitate in his answer.
He is as nice as it gets by qualifying that his answer is required by his sworn oath and not by choice.

China's Type 032 SSK is modified to fit the JL-3. And the JL-3 is non-ballistic HGV nuclear warheads capable, which cannot be intercepted by any anti-missile defence system with its non-ballistic trajectory.

It is likely that the lead boat of the Type 096 being already around the corner, since China usually deploys the boat prior the SLBM, just like the Type 094 and the JL-2. The earliest Type 094 was equipped with the JL-1A until the JL-2 was combat-ready.

Just check the posterior part of the tower which is the part that hosts the SLBM, and it is modified to fit an even larger SLBM.

China has advantage in land-based nuclear warheads while US leads in sea-based nuclear warheads.
Overall, both countries are roughly equal now.
