US 7th Fleet Commander is coming to Bangladesh in August 2013

@arp2041 , there won't be any US naval base here. The shores of Bangladesh are way too shallow to facilitate an aircraft carrier. Also, it isn't rational to place one so close to China.

However, the issue of Status-of-Forces Agreement (SOFA) is in the negotiating table. USA appears to be looking forward to that, but it is unlikely to move forward anytime soon on Bangladesh's part.

As far as any US naval base around India is concerned, there are rumors that they intend to buy one of Maldive's islands for that very purpose. Though, this is just rumor.

The GoB may not be in a mood to allow a foreign naval base in BD shore. However, a kind of berthing arrangement for the USN's 7th fleet may be on the table. USA will be rather happy if this arrangement will be supplemented with a refusal to allow a Chinese facility on BD shore. However, USA should put a few grains of sugar to BD to sweeten its proposal, such as, three sq. of F-16, 5 units of missile frigates, three submarines, etc. etc. How you guys think about it?

I guess, Indian postes will not like the arrangement, though. Indians are rather perplexed at the thought of why a small BD has become the focal point of Asia and the world. Why even their FM people have started to point out the geopolitical importance of this small BD? Why even Russia, China and USA all the big countries are coming to BD shore and selling weapons to it? It must be the sore point for the Indian posters.

But, they should look at the map. It is indeed the center point of Asia. BD controls the land and sea trade routes between ASEAN and India. Even BIMSTEC future depends on BD's goodwill, and through BIMSTEC BD controls the future of Indian prosperity. BD also controls the future of Indian NE. So, Indians should rather readily accept us as the center of asian future and prosperity.

Firstly, I doubt that BD reaching some kind of a naval / security pact with US is likely to ruffle feathers of the indian establishment. In The short to mid-term future, US is likely to partner India. So, any security arrangement with the US, at the expense of the Chinese - will only help reassure the Indian defence planners.

Secondly, are you sure BD is not the center of the universe?

Selling weapons to BD?! What kind of strategic-financial boost can BD provide with a defence budget of USD 2.3 billion?! The numbers don't back your claim of over-eager westerners flocking to Dhaka.

And did you just claim that BD CONTROLS sea routes between ASEAN and India? Firstly, the strategic relevance of BD itself could be debated, given the presence of all three arms of Indian defence forces in the Andamans. Secondly, does BD have the wares to back claims of wresting control of the sea lanes from India?

And since when did BIMSTEC become the key to "Indian prosperity"? Besides, its a multilateral forum. Why do expect BD to enjoy a free hand?

BD has got a few things right and looks to be on right path of growth and development. But to imagine BD as the "focal point of Asia and the world" is pushing it a little too far.

simple answer: bangladesh is one of rear nations who has good relation with all gobal powers and their allies. This century is going to be asian century and bangladesh also will be part of it. So it is logical that to get more attention of all parties without any problem and if you check geography, our position is between two major parts of asia. eg. USA, China and some other countries showed interest to invest in deep sea port.

Vice Admiral Scott H. Swift, commander of the US 7th Fleet is coming to Bangladesh in August 2013.
It is said that he is coming for 4 days visit (6th August to 9th August) to talk about Military co-operation between Bangladesh and USA. Recently US Pacific fleet Chief Commander Cecil D. Haney showed interest in Military co-operation and participation with Bangladesh

Till date we have never given access to US to make a base inside BD. We shall never give either. Let them come and go... Or we can trade with them: Port Mongla against Visa Fee access of BD people in US and 100 year deal for importing all garments from Bangladesh only...

1) and whoever going to be defeated, your country will be certainly destroyed..popcorn anyone?? :pop:

1) Even a a passive and neutral BD is so bad for India. India wil lose Arunachal in a few days to Chinese troops, and the rest of NE will become independent. An actively pro-China BD will only make matters worse for Indian control on NE. So, although India does not cherish an US pesence in its backyard always watching over Indian troop buldups, but a little US presence will be good booster for Indian morale.

2) It may be tht he will come to hand over the boat to BD, but it is not the only military and cvilian offcers to come to BD during the last two years. There have been more than ten such visits by them that also include the visit of Hillary Clinton. She has declared, on behalf of the USA, that the security of Bay of Bengal lies only with Bangladesh. It was very hard for India to swallow that American prescription, I guess!

he comes there to distables the region the Yak are never done any thing good in there full history

What is hype of 7th fleet commander ? It would be understandable if head of the armed forces was coming.
