On Thursday, five persons in Kolkata were arrested by officials of Kolkata Police with supposedly what was uranium. However, chemical tests revealed the mixture wasn’t the element coveted by shady spy agencies and dictators.

Praveen Tripathi, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) told DNA that packets didn’t contain uranium.


The five were arrested from Mango Lane in central Kolkata late into the night on Wednesday. Among the five arrested were Javed Miandad, a resident of Nanur in Birbhum district, SK Mughal, a resident of Sutahata in East Midnapore district, Shahjahan Mondal from Baduria in North 24 Parganas district, Younis Biswas and Basant Sinha from Behrampore district.

Police sources said that two packets of white powdery substance recovered from them with 'Uranium' written on the pack.

The accused had claimed it was uranium worth around Rs 3 crore which they were trying to sell.

A senior official of Lal Bazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters said that the powders recovered had been sent for a test to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory. Along with the powdery substance, fake appointment letters of the forest department were also seized from them.

One of accused said that it was brought from Maharashtra When interrogated separately one said ‘uranium’ was used for treatment of cancer during radiation process.

Radiotherapy doesn't use Uranium from anywhere. There are very specific radioisotopes and they aren't supplied by random people and even that has strict regulations.
