Upgraded Chinese-Pakistani JF-17 Fighter Jet Slated for Export

Officials from the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) and the Pakistani Air Force (PAF) command announced Monday at the 14th Dubai Airshow that an upgraded version of the jointly developed JF-17 fighter jet will soon be exported to customers around the globe.

The next generation of the JF-17 "Thunder" combat aircraft will satisfy the growing market demand from third parties, Liu Yu, vice president of China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation, told the international media at the AVIC chalet on the tarmac of Al Maktoum Airport.

Future iterations of the JF-17 will have more advanced capabilities, including aerial refueling, data link and electronic warfare, and support of guided weaponry, said Liu.

A dual-seated fighter/trainer version of the JF-17 is also in the works, he added.

Meanwhile, PAF Air Vice Marshal Arshad Malik expressed confidence that the new version of the jet will go into service by the end of 2016.

Also known as the CAC FC-1 Xiaolong, the JF-17 single-engine multirole fighter is co-manufactured by AVIC and PAF based on the principle of "joint investment, joint development, and sharing risks and returns."

Several parties have already shown interest in procuring the JF-17, with several potential customers conducting or are planning to conduct evaluations of the aircraft in the near future, according to a report from the Global Times.

With its outstanding flight performance, strong operational capability and high performance-to-cost ratio, the JF-17 fighter will be favored by more and more third-party customers, both AVIC and PAF said in a statement.

The 14th Dubai International Airshow officially kicked off in Dubai on Sunday and will run until Thursday, Nov. 12. A large-scale JF-17 model was displayed at the AVIC booth, and a real JF-17 fighter also made aerobatic performances at the event.

Now PAF should take steps to further decrease RCS by applying RAM coatings heat suppressing measures/smokeless engine to materialise a capable block 3 JF17.

I think KSA has ordered it for new base where Pak Military will be present.

RAM quoting may not come till block 4, and that would be a different plane even still under the JFT umbrella. I'd be surprised to see those in block III. The air-frame isn't designed for Stealth optimization and it would be VERY difficult to do so (and very expensive per hour flight cost).

And the engine doesn't have any issues. Its just a Thrust and Combustion timing issue. In quicker thrust engines developed in the late 80's / early 90's, the smoke comes as the need for quick thrust dumps more fuel into the combustion chamber, thus releasing extra burnt Carbon discharge, but providing instantaneous increase or decrease in the thrust as needed by the pilot.

When Pakistan starts to develop $ 40+ million a piece advance jets, you can use a more fully digital engine and that won't have smoke, but it will be costly as it'll be the latest Tech.

Historically Russian fighter engines have been designed for high performance and short life spans. Since they were designed for real war conditions and not the convenience of peacetime, they had relatively short Mean Time Between Overhauls (MTBO) of a few hundred hours and/or short total life spans. Since aircraft were rotated out of rough forward areas as their limited operating time expired, maintenance was rarely done in these areas and engines were produced in larger quantities thus lowering unit costs. It also kept the engine manufactures closer to war rate production levels as opposed to the slowly responsive, market oriented, peacetime rates. Hence their design quality, manufacturing quality, technology and performance levels, all steadily improved. Characteristics of the RD-33 engine are listed below.
RD-33 design history dates back to the early 1970's when Pratt & Whitney and General Electric were working towards the F-15, F-16 and F-18. The Russians selected, what they say, was a similar configuration approach for the RD-33; a two shaft low bypass ratio turbofan (0.4 : 1), with a four stage fan without inlet guide vanes, but with an inlet cruciform supporting structure for the front fan bearing. The high pressure compressor features nine stages, of which the first three have variable geometry stator vanes giving a pressure ratio of 20:1. There is also the annular combustion chamber, two single staged turbines , and an afterburner that burns both fuel and core flow with by-pass air in a mixture. Hydromechanical controls on the engine have built in diagnostics for ease of maintenance. The RD-33 has eleven modules with all HP and LP blades capable of being replaced.
A recent V. Chernyshev (RD-33 manufacturer) add says that the German Air Force has found that the RD-33 MTBO can be held at 700 hours if the engines are properly maintained (MilTech 12/94, pg. 18). With this experience or hype, Mikoyan is confident that they can quickly bring the service life of the MiG-29 up to 4000 hours with mod provisions taking this to 6000 hours. Likewise the overhaul cycle of the RD-33 engine for all customers could be quickly lifted from its original 350 hours to 700 hours to first overhaul and life out to 1400 hours. The new German Air Force has been working together with DASA and V. Chernyshev to set-up modern computer-based MiG-29 supply system that would further increase their engine MTBO to 1200 hours.

1) There is no "cheaper stuff", the Chinese use 3D printing and that would still require changes to the air-frame. And those may not be noticeable, or be very noticeable. I am not sure. The manufacturing process will be modified to use 3D printing and composites.

2) Like I explained, the engine doesn't have an issue with regards to the smoke. The PAF is all the way in with RD engine and they won't be used anything else for the first two blocks. In fact they may introduce RD-33 MA, before introducing a Chinese engine. RD-33 gives the PAF required performance and at a much cheaper cost. You can make a bigger deal out of it, but its a very reliable engine and does what its supposed to do, for the size that the JFT has!

Support for Guided weapons? hmm thats something new. Had heard that US does that with its drones etc.
Basically AWACS is used for such purpose.
