LAHORE: Only a few days after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered serious action against electricity and gas bill defaulters, the gas supply to his own official residence was cut off over unpaid bills worth Rs4.7 million.

Roznama Express correspondent Zia Tanoli reported on Monday that Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has disconnected gas supply to the Prime Minister House Islamabad, Parliament lodges, Convention Centre and Federal Shariat Court among other government offices.

According to the SSGC spokesperson, Parliament House has dues worth Rs1.3 million, Parliament Lodges Rs770,000, Federal Shariat Court Rs224,000 and Governor House Rs8.8 million.

All the defaulters had been sent notices several times but no response was received, the spokesperson said.

Interestingly, PM Nawaz had chaired a high-level meeting on April 23 regarding the overall electricity and gas distribution system where he had ordered strict action to be taken against electricity pilferers and bill defaulters.

He had directed the authorities to not even spare government installations and offices.

State Minister for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali has ordered Islamabad Electricity Supply Company (IESCO) to disconnect supply to government institutions that have not cleared their dues.

The list of defaulters includes the Presidency, Parliament Lodges, PM Secretariat,Parliament House, Cantonment Board, Supreme Court, residence of the Chief Justice along with government offices of NADRA and CDA. Orders have also been issued to disconnect electricity supply to Frontier Works Organisation, Punjab Jail, Sindh and Balochistan House and Motorway Police.

During a news conference Abdi Sher Ali said the Sindh government had dues of Rs56 billion while the provincial governments of Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also had to clear their outstanding dues.

The state minister added that he had been given directives by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to collect dues and stop electricity theft within one month. According to Abid Sher Ali protests against load shedding were taking place in areas where electricity theft was common.

The minister also announced to issue the load shedding schedule soon.

Pakistan PM’s house has gas cut off over unpaid bills

Pakistan’s prime minister has become the most high-profile victim of his own push against utility bill defaulters after the gas was cut off to his residence.
Gas company officials said they shut off supplies on Sunday evening after sending a final demand to Nawaz Sharif’s office for arrears of more than £28,000.
Unpaid bills are one of the biggest factors in the country’s crippling power crisis that sees swathes of the country disconnected for hours every day.
A spokesman for Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited said the prime minister’s residence and a string of other government buildings were cut off over bills totalling almost £100,000.
The move had been made, he added, after Mr Sharif himself ordered the crackdown.
“We were already acting against gas defaulters but the prime minister’s initiative further strengthened it,” he said.
He said repeat notices had been ignored and that the buildings would be reconnected when payments had been made.
The episode will be seized on by Mr Sharif’s opponents as yet another example of inefficiency at the highest levels – or a fresh symptom of the corruption that has plagued the country for years.
The timing could not be more embarrassing.
Only five days earlier Mr Sharif – elected last year to overhaul Pakistan’s moribund economy – ordered tough action to be taken against electricity and gas bill defaulters to help ease the energy crisis.
He put the country on what he called a “war footing” against energy theft.
However, government departments are frequently cited as the worst offenders, responsible for creating “circular debt”, which means power generating companies do not have the finances to buy fuel and keep the national grid supplied with electricity.
Such is the state of the crisis that ministries have ordered workers to wear light, loose clothing in summer to reduce the reliance on air conditioning.
An official in the prime minister’s secretariat blamed “slackness” in government departments for delays in paying their dues.
“This sends a message to the whole country. If even the prime minister can be cut off then nobody is above the law,” he said on Tuesday, adding that the bill had been now been paid.

I have seen in this forum that people are in favour of radical/revolutionary changes. If you see in the history radical/abrupt changes resulted in loss of millions of human life be it in France, be it in Russia or Iran/Iraq. Further there is always a chance that antirevolutionary forces will take away the cream.
I am in favour of little but steady and continual changes in right direction. Appreciate such changes in your country and support that whole heartedly. Put pressure on establishment for more such progressive changes. registance will be much lesser, progess will be slow but steady

This is true for both of our sibling countries. After long battle in India we got Right to Information law. Politicians are going to jail on corruption charges. Nobody could think this few years back. But I agree, we crossed only very little way, long way to go. Still corruption are there, still rapes are their. Power supply to Parliament, Supreme Court disconnected

The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has disconnected electricity supply to the Supreme Court of Pakistan and Parliament House.

The PWD is responsible for clearing electricity dues of the Supreme Court and according to IESCO officials the bill was not paid for six months which amount to Rs3.5 million.

The Parliament House has outstanding dues worth Rs120 million and it is the responsibility of the Capital Development Authority to clear dues.

Earlier, State Minister for Water and Power ordered IESCO to disconnect electricity supply to 18 government institutions including the Presidency, Parliament Lodges and the residence of Chief Justice of Pakistan.
