LAHORE: Only a few days after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered serious actionagainst electricity and gas bill defaulters, the gas supply to his own official residence was cut off over unpaid bills worth Rs4.7 million.

Roznama Express correspondent Zia Tanoli reported on Monday that Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has disconnected gas supply to the Prime Minister House Islamabad, Parliament lodges, Convention Centre and Federal Shariat Court among other government offices.

According to the SSGC spokesperson, Parliament House has dues worth Rs1.3 million, Parliament Lodges Rs770,000, Federal Shariat Court Rs224,000 and Governor House Rs8.8 million.

All the defaulters had been sent notices several times but no response was received, the spokesperson said.

Interestingly, PM Nawaz had chaired a high-level meeting on April 23 regarding the overall electricity and gas distribution system where he had ordered strict action to be taken against electricity pilferers and bill defaulters.

He had directed the authorities to not even spare government installations and offices.
At least it got disconnected. There would have been hell to pay if someone had cut the gas supply off to the PM house with Bhutto or Zardari in there. This is a good step and if they pay up then it would prevent others from pilferring as well.

So i guess people are going to pay for the diesel for the Huge Generators for these Buildings ...

A very good sign for future. Of course it's just temporary but a good example to set. If the electricity for Parliament, Supreme Court can be disconnected, it can be disconnected for anybody.

Pay your bills or live in darkness :D

Up in smoke: CDA using generators to power offices

ISLAMABAD:
Instead of clearing its outstanding electricity bills to restore its severed power connections, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has again resorted to using generators to power its offices. The exercise is costing the civic agency Rs1.5 million per day in fuel costs, it emerged on Thursday.

The power supply of the civic body’s main offices was severed by the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (ISECO) on April 29 after it failed to pay outstanding arrears to the tune of Rs2 billion.

IESCO sprang into action after Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali ordered power supplying companies across the country to go after defaulters.

A CDA official, asking not to be named, said that instead of clearing the bills, the CDA has rented three heavy generators to power its offices.

The official said that a 550KV generator has been hooked up to the CDA chairman’s office, a 350KV generator for the estate office, and a 225KV generator to supply electricity to other offices in the same block. The official said that the generators were used from 8am to 4pm to “ensure uninterrupted supply” to the offices, in the wake of the mercury level that has gone up in the last one week.

Officials in the CDA electrical and mechanical department told The Express Tribune that the 550KVA generator alone consumed 800 litres of diesel a day at a cost of around Rs88,000.

Similarly, the 350 KVA generator consumed 400 litres of diesel per day at a cost of Rs44,000, while the 225 KVA generator consumed 200 litres at a cost of Rs22,000.

The fuel was being purchased under a pre-existing agreement with Pakistan State Oil, the official confided.

The official said that IESCO only restored power to the Directorate of Municipal Administration after it paid Rs360 million.

IESCO also disconnected the civic agency’s power supply in 2012. At the time, the civic body owed ‘only’ Rs8.7 million, and went ahead with using generators for a month instead of clearing the dues.

A senior official of the same department while requested anonymity said that the CDA should clear dues instead of engaging generators, considering the authority was already facing a financial crunch.

“How can we afford this practice in the long run?”

An official in IESCO confirmed to The Express Tribune that the CDA has been a defaulter for many years. “Every time, they just pay a nominal amount and we restore the electricity, but this time they have exceeded the limit,” he added.

Repeated attempts were made to contact CDA Spokesperson Asim Khichi, but he was not available for comment.

Power supply to 66 govt offices, depts disconnected in Lahore

LAHORE: In its drive to recover dues, the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) on Wednesday disconnected supplies to 66 government offices and departments for failing to clear their bills.

According to Lesco officials, the defaulters included Punjab police, SSP office, Punjab Highways Authority, District Council Hall, District Government Health office and Irrigation EXEN, besides the residence of Punjab Assembly Speaker Rana Iqbal.

“Some of these offices have not paid their dues for years,” says a Lesco official.

For example, the irrigation executive engineer had defaulted on Rs31 million payment, the Archeology Department Rs2.3 million, the Wagah Town TMO Rs7.6 million, Shalamar TMO Rs1.6 million, the LDA (UD Wing) chief engineer Rs5.9 million and the Passenger and Freight district officer Rs119 million.

“All these offices now face disconnection and the supply will not be restored unless they clear their dues,” he warned.
