Unemployment Rate Doubles in World's Fastest Growing Economy

India’s unemployment rate has doubled in the eight years to 2018 with the higher educated and younger population accounting for the most without jobs, a new research by a privately run university shows.

After remaining at about 2 to 3 percent during the decade to 2011, the unemployment rate in India has increased to more than 6 percent in last year, a report posted by the nation’s Azim Premji University on its website shows. The numbers “clearly demonstrate why unemployment has emerged as the primary economic issue” in the federal elections that are underway, researchers led by Amit Basole said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is seeking a reelection, has been criticized by the opposition for not fulfilling his promise of creating 10 million jobs each year -- a promise that won him the hearts of India’s youth in the 2014 election. Better employment opportunities is the top priority of voters in the world’s fastest growing major economy, according to a survey by the Association for Democratic Reforms, an election watchdog.

World’s Fastest-Growing Economy Isn’t Creating Jobs Like Before

The university’s report estimated that five million men lost their jobs since government announced a cash ban in 2016, although no “direct causal relationship” can be established between the two based on these trends alone. Earlier this year, a leaked report from a government agency pegged jobless rate in the nation at a 45-year high of 6.1 percent.

. . .
This will be trend in coming decade too..
With more poeple getting educated and shying away from manual works at the same time when world is going towards AI / ML and higher degree of automation, it would not be that easy to get jobs, new avenues of entrepreneurial opportunities have to be built by govt. Enhanced focus on R&D sector and new verticals would probably generate jobs other wise traditional vertical are already over saturated and have limited demands.

.
I think this has to do with increase in college graduates. Maybe there's not enough college level jobs for them. 2-3% unemployment though is astounding, even 6.1% is not bad. Many developed countries have much higher unemployment rates.

Most college level education dont impart the skills needed to do the jobs in today's market...they teach obsolete stuff that no student will use in the field like ever...some companies instead of hiring college educated with obsolete skill set students...run their own college of sort and train high school students and get them ready for real jobs in 24 months...example like this is this.

i work in logistics most of the truck drivers we hire are engineering degree holders...one engineering professor also drives trucks for my company...they all earn 3 to 4 times what an average engineer makes in india...but its hard work nonetheless...their logic is at least we get paid decently...and i agree as i too drive trucks in the same company when important stuff needs to be shipped and drivers are not available at that moment...after they get some experience they go on to greener pastures in the trucking business.

Jobs are there but like one poster about said...everyone wants to dress great and sit in A/C office and make easy money...those days are long gone...i still remember these IT guys looking down upon the rest like they are some kinda royals or something...lol.

Oh yes, India is becoming so advanced that AI is causing loss of jobs.

Come to India, i can show you how many jobs are lost due to AI and ML.
And this is not going to be just India specific, this is going to happen globally.
And anyone who knows how AI and ML can make difference, will for sure know what jobs are going away..
Simple examples are image post processing jobs, security scanning, ware house management.

These geniuses have no idea what is coming for them .Wait till China's industrial 4.0 is complete.

.
No massive manufacturing industry, no alleviation of massive unemployment of a massive population nation.
