UN urges Greek Cypriots to compensate Turkish Cypriots

A report released by the United Nations Convention against Torture also called on the Greek Cypriot authorities to allow better visitation rights for Turkish Cypriot prisoners in Greek Cypriot jails.

The United Nations Convention against Torture has urged the Greek Cypriot administration to pay compensation for the Turkish Cypriots who went missing between 1963-1974 to ease tensions, after releasing a report.

The Missing Persons Committee on the island welcomed the invitation to pay compensation, also calling for efforts to offer psychological rehabilitation for the loved ones of missin persons to be doubled.

1,493 Greek Cypriots and 502 Turkish Cypriots went missing during the ethnic clashes which eventually led to Turkey carrying out a military intervention on the island in July 1974 after far-right Greek group EOKA conducted a coup on the government.

So far, the bodies of 359 Greek Cypriots and 97 Turkish Cypriots have been found.

The report also called on the Greek Cypriot authorities to allow better visitation rights for Turkish Cypriot prisoners in Greek Cypriot jails.

The call comes after the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Turkey must pay 90 million euros in compensation to Greek Cypriots for damages and losses suffered during the intervention.

Turkey for its part said the court's decision was not binding and said it was unable to pay a state it did not recognize.

While Turkey is the only country to recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which declared its independence in 1983, the Turkish government does not recognize the Greek Cypriot administration in the south.
