Ukraine Delivers First Upgraded IL-78 To The PAF

It was the backup option after the KC-135 and A310 MRTT. The PAF even tried asking for the A330 MRTT, but Airbus (likely under pressure from the US) declined to offer it. The only tenable AAR options right now are (1) the Embraer KC-390 (but with UPAZ pods); (2) Y-20U; and (3) swinging for the fences by modding the A330 with UPAZ mods.
Y20U seems more practical as most current procurements are from china .. in presence of JFT and J10C and may be future chances of J31/j35

A310 MRTT would have been slightly better. I doubt USA had any inclination to not allow A330 MRTT, the only thing is that it probably would have been out of their budget allotment for aerial tankers. Another option is always to have upgraded Hercs with drogue style refueling.

Still the modernization process of PAF yet to start so we may hope some better and advance option in coming years

IL-76s in general have a terrible availability rate. These upgrades should make our IL-78s more efficient.
Ideal induction/replacement for PAF will be KC-390s as same aircraft would also be the ideal successor for the C-130s in PAF.

The KC-390 option would also be better for dispersed airfields due to its smaller size.

Good news , not additional units but good to keep these machines serviced till we add more Options in future

Great joke and enjoyed it. However joke aside do we know what upgrades have been carried out on the ILs.? Help appreciated. Would also give an indication of how PAF wants to proceed with upgrades to other platforms of the type.

Sadly, there isn't much info on it from the Ukrainian side either. Don't want to use the term *hush-hush*.

They used terms like 'overhaul' and 'modernization'. What, they installed seats that now have cushions & could recline...?

In Ukraine, completed the repair of the Pakistani Air Force IL-78 aerial refueling tanker

Honestly, I fail to understand what upgrades they could possibly do on those rust buckets.

As someone pointed out that it could carry upto 40 Tons of fuel. What good is that when it needs 20 Tons just to stay in the air.
