LONDON (AP) — Two Pakistani weapons companies were expelled from a major London weapons fair after a British lawmaker discovered that cluster munitions were being advertised at their stands, the show's organizers said Saturday.
Green Party parliamentarian Caroline Lucas said she discovered brochures promoting the weapons at a pair of Pakistani stands pitched at London's Defense System and Equipment International exhibition held earlier this week.
Britain is a signatory to the international convention on cluster munitions, which prohibits the use, production, stockpiling or transfer of cluster munitions — the name given to weapons such as bombs or shells which pepper large areas with shrapnel or mini-explosives. Human rights advocates say such weapons are inherently indiscriminate and often kill civilians.
The exhibition's website makes clear that ads for such weapons are banned from the show, but Lucas said she found brochures for 155 millimeter (about 6-inch) artillery-fired cluster bombs at the Pakistan Ordnance Factory stand and Pakistan's Defense Export Promotion Organization pavilion.
"I'm shocked that the British government seems unable or unwilling to police arms sales happening here on its own soil," she said in a statement, demanding that the arms fair be shut down.
The fair's organizers confirmed the discovery, saying the stands were dismantled after Lucas flagged the issue on Thursday.
Pakistani officials and a London-based technical attache for the Pakistan Ordnance Factory could not be immediately reached. On its website, the group describes itself as the Pakistani military's "largest defense industrial complex," composed of 14 factories and two subsidiaries.

selling cluster bombs which are banned how dumb can they be or desperate perhaps

This has nothing to do with being Pakistani. The thread title is accurate but misleading. It's more about following the rules.

I think the U.K needs to be banned itself.

Why are you getting so emotional ? As I said, it has nothing to do with Pakistan. You are simply misguiding others into despising UK for no good reason just because you do.

I dont like the U.K government not the country itself you retard, why are you getting so emotional? go take some pills or something.

I wasn't referring to the "country itself" either. If you like the "country itself" then why would you want it to be "banned itself" ?
First you start a thread misleading people into believing Pakistani exhibitors were unfairly expelled. Then you go on with ranting about UK (note: the UK Government) and then claim to actually like UK (note: The country itself) whilst flaming.

Perhaps you're the one who needs to be banned itself.

Rules are rules. If the event clearly laid down the boundaries, then it was very clumsy and careless of POF to continue to have such munitions on display --especially when there is a lot of talk of banning cluster munitions (a recent convention on it was held in Beirut)

at the same time, expelling the exhibitors was an extreme step.....those Green party britisher marxist losers are a real handful and a real ear-load. What the hell are they doing nosing around at an arms fair anyways? Nothing better to do with their pathetic lives, clearly.

if they took the items off display, that would have been a sufficient outcome. We pay good money to display our goods at defence shows, so this will prove to be a waste. I believe Heavy Industries Taxila will still display their products.

again, rules are rules. Our guys should have been better briefed. The article mentions a "London-based technical attache for the Pakistan Ordnance Factory" --- well WTF were they doing? Twiddling their thumbs?

If you are in the ammunition business and still get it so wrong you suffer the consequences of the country you are advertising your product. Stupid men

its 59th thread on this news looking like i am reading it again and again since 3 days please stop it we know this news damn .

i'll be very honest with you.....whenever POF, HIT etc. do exhibitions in foreign countries -- it is usually the local hosts who have a liason officer to coordinate between the defence company(s) and the exhibition organizers.

the people sitting behind the POF and HIT stands are just civilian guys, some of them are really good at what they do (I mean, REALLY good). But i've also seen airheads who dont even know wtf they are doing, or what they are supposed to do. They go to the back room of the stall where a coffee and tea maker is set up -- they eat mitthai and drink chai.

of course we have military personnel there as reps of POF/HIT/etc. and they are the ones that do the deals, discuss terms, do the talking, etc.

and its unfortunate that they had not been given a good de-briefing with the technical attache for POF........if its just an issue of cluster bombs, all we had to do was hide the damn things and take them off display.

a costly error
