UAE criticises Ahmadinejad visit to disputed Gulf island | Reuters

(Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates criticised Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit on Wednesday to a Persian Gulf island claimed by both countries since the 1970s.

"His visit ... is a flagrant violation of the United Arab Emirates' sovereignty over its territory and a transgression of efforts to find a peaceful settlement to end Iranian occupation of the three UAE islands," said Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan, cited by state news agency WAM.

The Iranian state news agency IRNA said Ahmadinejad visited Abu Musa island on Wednesday as part of a tour of Iran's Gulf coast, but did not refer to the territorial dispute.

Both countries claim Abu Musa and two other small islands, located near key shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Gulf.

The islands have been held by Iran since 1971, shortly before the seven Gulf emirates gained full independence from Britain and formed the UAE.

The UAE has urged Tehran to agree to take the dispute to the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Iran says its sovereignty over the islands is not negotiable but has called for talks with the UAE to clear up "misunderstandings".

UAE territory violation!Wow these Arabs should be marked as one of the seven wonders of the world.A country that didn't exist before 1971 and was a complete wasteland,is now claiming islands that Iran has owned for 2500 years. You are all a complete joke.

simple those that have control own these islands can visit them without anyone saying anything its like the china,s islands issues those that have control regularly visit them and the others cant say anything problems comes when their ships visit the other parties controlled islands:p:P:p:P what are uae bases on these claims you cant just pick an island and claim them are they close to uae?

Let's station a few hundred short range missiles in these islands, see if they're still gonna talk crap. One missile in the middle of dubai, and the party will be over. Lights out. Bye bye. Khalas.

Honestly, what are these clowns thinking? Don't they realize that their country runs on foreign investment, tourism etc...? A war will stop ALL foreign investment. But they still keep pushing our buttons. All the jets in the world won't stop missiles falling down on downtown dubai by the tens of thousands.

Two questions: where does money from, to build such a city in the image?

And what if the money stops coming?

That will be epic..Just what needed to bring down the occasional rhetoric of these .. Hundred SRBMs pointed towards Dubai and Sharjah will keep their mouths shut..

Saddam claimed one of his dirty goals to start the war with Iran was 'liberating'

well it was mostly to get the arab support and it did.........but uae shouldnt make statements like this that make little sense territorial dispute happen everywhere but you cant tell anyone to not visit the areas they control had they been building heavy military ports and military equipments then one can argue but not at this

answer 1: oil
Answer 2:getting back to living standards that Arabs had before discovering oil, maybe a little different.

In Order to prevent this happening, Arabs need imperialism, military or economic.
