HANOI, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Deputy Minister of Defense and Commander of the Vietnam People's Army Naval Command, Admiral Nguyen Van Hien met with Admiral Cecil D. Haney, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, in northern port city of Hai Phong, about 90 km east of Vietnamese capital Hanoi, on Friday.
Hien made a briefing of relations between Vietnam and the United States in recent years, including defense ties, which has finely developed in lines with the two countries' bilateral relations.
He highly evaluated results of activities by the Vietnamese and U.S naval ships conducted since the two sides established the mechanism on annual naval exchange, organization of professional exchange during the visiting U.S. vessels' stay in Vietnam, as well as invitation by the U.S. to its Vietnamese counterparts to attend international seminars and conferences, including the recent observance to the medical training drill in Hawaii.
Hien also expressed his hope that Admiral Cecil D. Haney in his position would actively promote relations between the two navies, boosting their defense ties to practical and efficient levels, contributing to developing cooperation for peace, friendship and respect between the two countries, and for peace and stability in the region.
Admiral Cecil D. Haney thanked the host for warm welcome and informed of events he would attend during his stay in Vietnam, including paying courtesy calls to leaders of the foreign ministry and local Nghe An provincial people's committee, reviewing the humanitarian project Pacific Partnership in Nghe An province sponsored by the U.S. Pacific Fleet, and visiting capital Hanoi
