WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots when an Iranian vessel in the Gulf came within 150 yards (137 meters) on Tuesday in the first such incident since President Donald Trump took office in January, a U.S. official told Reuters.

The last major incident was earlier in January, though there have been other instances when a U.S. vessel fired a flare and another event in March when a U.S. Navy ship was forced to change course after multiple fast-attack vessels from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard came too close.

The U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the USS Thunderbolt fired the warning shots after the Iranian vessel approached at a high rate of speed and ignored radio calls, flares and the ship's whistle. The Thunderbolt was accompanied by several U.S. Coast Guard vessels.

The Iranian vessel appeared to be from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the official said, adding that it was armed but that the weapons were unmanned.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iranian Foreign Ministry could not immediately be reached for comment.

Years of mutual animosity had eased when Washington lifted sanctions on Tehran last year as part of a deal to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions. But serious differences remain over Iran's ballistic missile program and conflicts in Syria and Iraq.

The Trump administration, which has struck a hard line on Iran, recently declared that Iran was complying with its nuclear agreement with world powers, but warned that Tehran was not following the spirit of the accord and that Washington would look for ways to strengthen it.

During the presidential campaign last September, Trump vowed that any Iranian vessels that harass the U.S. Navy in the Gulf would be "shot out of the water."

Such incidents occur occasionally. In January, a U.S. Navy destroyer fired three warning shots at four Iranian fast-attack vessels near the Strait of Hormuz after they closed in at high speed and disregarded repeated requests to slow down.

IRGC: it was the U.S ship which turned its course toward IRGC patrol unites, shots were toward sky, irgc unites didn't pay attentiin to them. after this provoking and unprofessional action, U.S ship leaved the area.

So which ship moved first the Iranian patrol vessel or the US ship?

Very unlikely given the fact that the IRIGC was an unarmed Naser-111 vessel.

Idk, I'm pretty sure the USN knows Iran has stand off missiles (in the hundreds) on-shore trained on US vessels at any given time. Just because thats an unarmed ship doesn't mean the threat of destruction or mass-casualties is gone. But this was another kabukki theater/chest-thumping bs from Iran and US.

TBH I don't have any info on this event or where the maritime lines of Iranian water goes to and ends. Hopefully w get a good update to it.

Iranian ships charge at USS Nimitz strike group in Persian Gulf; US fires flares; Iran complains
This is the second confrontation in just a few days

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the U.S. Navy’s USS Nimitz Strike Group fired “unprofessional” warning flares in a “provocative” confrontation with an Iranian offshore oil platform in the Persian Gulf on Friday, according to Iran.

However, the U.S. Navy said the Iranian vessel was approaching at a “high rate of speed” while the USS Nimitz was on regular patrol in the area.

The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) said the IRGC reported that the Nimitz and another ship approached the Iranian offshore oil platform, fired flares and flew a helicopter near the vessel, which is armed by the IRGC.

“The Americans made a provocative and unprofessional move by issuing a warning and shooting flares at vessels,” according to a statement from the IRGC that was published by its news site. “Islam’s warriors, without paying attention to this unconventional and unusual behavior from the American vessels, continued their mission in the area and the aircraft carrier and accompanying battleship left the area.”

The U.S. Navy described the incident as “safe and professional,” according to a report.

“The U.S. Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet said the incident happened while one of its helicopters was on a routine patrol in international airspace,” according to the report. “The aircraft saw several Guard vessels approaching US ships ‘at a high rate of speed’ and sent out flares after receiving no response when it tried to establish communications, the Navy said. That prompted the Iranian boats to halt their approach.”

Then, after communications were established, the Iranians conducted a “gun exercise,” firing into the water away from the American ships, the report stated.

The confrontation took place Friday afternoon and the Navy ships left the area afterward, according to a report.

The U.S. Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet had no immediate comment, according to the report.

Last week, on Tuesday, a Navy ship fired warning shots at an Iranian patrol boat in the Persian Gulf.

Video of the shots being fired has since been released.

The Iranian boat, believed to be operated by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, came within 150 yards of the USS Thunderbolt, a Cyclone-class patrol ship, that was involved in an exercise with other American vessels in the Persian Gulf.

Iranians, please work together with Pakistan, the Arabs are a lost cause. China can help you with technology and funding, link Chabahar to Gwadar, with a joint Pakistani/Iranian/Chinese fleet, no one can touch you.
