Well they were called "jeep girls" (Chinese women who hung around US forces in their jeeps). US soldiers were there for 4 or 5 years.

Also since the bicycle ( nevermind cars) was not popular (until Mao embraced this Western invention) the soldiers were carried around if they didn't have a jeep handy.
