The Type 055 destroyer is a class of guided missile destroyers that is in development for the People's Liberation Army Navy Surface Force.

Development Edit

Cultural Revolution-era proposed design Edit
Requirements for a proposed Type 055 destroyer were developed during the Cultural Revolution. After the Revolution, the requirements were reviewed, and the scope revised and reduced. Late revisions included British subsystems, including the Sea Dart surface-to-air missile and Rolls-Royce Olympus TM3B powerplant. The British technology failed to materialize and related projects, including the Type 055 and Type 051S, were cancelled in the early-1980s.[1]

This project was unrelated to the 2010s project.

2010s design Edit
In April 2014, images showed a full-scale mock-up facility of the superstructure of a large warship being erected at the Chinese naval electronic testing range in Wuhan. The mockup featured an enclosed integrated mast for radar and other electronics.[2][3] Observers have concluded the mockup was for a new class of Chinese warship, displacing approximately 10000 tons, and popularly referred to as Type 055.[4]

In 2015, military analyst Li Li claimed the Type 055 would have two 64-cell VLS grids (one fore and one aft) carrying YJ-100 long-range anti-ship cruise missiles, anti-submarine missiles, and anti-aircraft missiles.[5] The United States believed the ship would carry YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missiles.[6]

In 2013, Richard Fisher speculated that, if Chinese development was extrapolated, the Type 055 might be the first Chinese warship to mount laser weapons.[7]

In 2015, the U.S believed that construction could begin as early as 2016, and has tentatively classified it as a cruiser due to its size.[8][9]

Chinese sources claimed the first Type 055 was ordered from the Jiangnan Shipyard in August 2014, with construction starting in December 2014; the second would be ordered from the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company.[2]

In an interview in 2015, Yin Zhuo countered Western media claims that the Type 055 represented a game changer in naval warfare. Yin regarded the Type 055 as equivalent to the U.S Arleigh Burke-class destroyer and the emphasis of its estimated 10000 ton displacement was exaggerated; the existing Japanese Atago-class destroyer was over 9000 tons, the American Zumwalt-class destroyer was over 12000 tons, and the Russian Udaloy-class destroyer was around 8000 tons. Yin stated that if the Type 055 were to mount lasers or electromagnetic guns, the ship would require a power system that would be revolutionary for the PLAN.[10]

Description: The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Type 055 existence was disclosed by Japanese Internet media in 2013 referring to a new class frigate being developed in China. The ship's displacement of 12,000 tons seems to be more likely a destroyer or a cruiser equipped with missiles and with fully oceanic capabilities allowing it to operate far beyond the Sea of China in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Its primary goal may be to operated as part of the future Chinese aircraft carriers battle groups, serve as command and control ship and/or to operate alone or within surface combatants formations. This multi-purpose ship may be equipped with a new gas turbine, QC280, and is intended as a multipurpose surface combatant with some sort of modularity. Besides the traditional Anti-Air Warfare (AAW), Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW), the ship will feature land attack capabilities as part of a fully multi-functional design. The ship will also feature greater firepower with far more Unai vertical launching system (VLS) cells than provided to the Type 052D destroyer, 64 cells on Type 052D and 160 cells on Type 055. The lead ship of the new frigate or destroyer would be commissioned by the PLAN in the 2015-2020 timeframe.
The Type 055 class of global destroyers are intended to enjoy longer range and longer endurance at sea than the Type 052D class as well as improved living conditions for the crew. The ship will feature improved stealth characteristics in the electromagnetic, infrared and acoustic spectrums with very low radar, heat and noise signatures. The flight deck and hangar will allow operation of two Z-15 (a version of Airbus Helicopters EC 175) anti-submarine (ASW) helicopters. The propulsion system based on the QC280 gas turbine may allow a top speed in excess of 30 knots. The Type 055 destroyers may be equipped with 10 sets of Unai VLS with 16 or cells each four at the bow and the remaining six at the castle before the helicopter hangar. Each Unai VLS can be fitted with either HHQ-9B surface-to-air missile (SAM), anti-submarine rocket (ASROC), land attack cruise missile, anti-ballistic missile (ABM) interceptor or YJ-18A advanced anti-ship missile. Besides, the ship is fitted with a 130mm single barrel PJ38 naval gun, HQ-10 short-range anti-missile system and 11 30mm guns. A key feature of the Type 055 destroyer is a greater load of electronics including more powerful, radar antennas, telecommunications, multi-functional integrated stealth masts, and electronic warfare equipment.

Looks awsome and will give pak a good capability

How do you plan to afford said cruiser? The Ticonderoga class cost an estimated 1 billion USD:

The US Navy -- Fact File: Cruisers - CG

The Zumwalt 3 billion per ship - 22 billion for the total program:

http://www.gao.gov/assets/670/668986.pdf#page=81

Way, way to expensive for the ship alone, and that cost doesn't include training, maintenance, weapons or basing. Chinese weapons tend to be cheaper than their Western counterparts (Maybe, reliable info isn't available), but a system like this isn't going to be cheap at all. And perhaps you should wait until it's even inducted and the bugs are worked out before opting for an interest in the program.

Here's a better, more cost effective alternative:

DSCF5479.jpg

This is Turkey's MILGEM project, you could buy a few for the cost of a single Type 055:

Will construct a further six MİLGEM project (Ada class) corvettes for the Turkish Navy at a cost of US$1.5 billion.

1.5 Milyar dolarlık savaş gemisi ihalesini kim kazandı | Ekonomi Haberleri I Türkiye'nin en saygın ekonomi ve iş dünyası sitesi

6 MILGEMs for 1.5 billion. That's a good deal.

And given Pakistan's support infrastructure and naval doctrine of coastal defense, it's a better option anyway.

Dude, What's the cost??? With Buying 8 sub i don't know if PN can afford.

And buying few of this is not going to change much that's why PN smartly went for Subs in good numbers which is very threatening

.
I think we should look for Type 45 from UK. What I heard during David Cameron last visit to Pakistan he offered these ships.

.
Type 52 and 54 PN should consider that before Type 55

you must have sniffed some really strong glue before you created this thread. really the type 55? why stop there whilst you're at it. why not buy type 95 nuclear subs or j20 jets,

finally someone with some sense. now your'e talking 250 million each is cheap. and it coming from turkey, it will come with tot, which will cost more. but the tf-100 with a vls is more of a reasonable solution to be the successor to the tariq class frigates. and can help one day allow Pakistan to build its own frigates and eventually destroyers.

a lot of people on this thread want to go from pistol to railgun over night. it takes time and development for such developments

Some media and news channels reported and even this Type 55 won't be cheap but Britain has offered us good weapons in the past also

Who's paying?
it will be a stretch even for the saudis.

Some media and news channels reported and even this Type 55 won't be cheap but Britain has offered us good weapons in the past also
rubbish! the type 45 is too expensive.let me put it to you like this, the sterling is the strongest reserve currency in the world by exchange rate alone, it will be unviable tp procure such a large ship.

the saudis were interested, and thats a good claim as they witnessed the launch of a ship, and were in talks, but by then the all of the ship had been built and production had shut down, so they went to France instead
