Two years after HK tourist massacre, Chinese travelers hail PHL | Lifestyle | GMA News Online | The Go-To Site for Filipinos Everywhere

Two and a half years after the Luneta hostage tragedy nearly sank Philippine tourism, the country is clearly back on China's tourist map. Shanghai's daily newspaper “Oriental Morning Post” named Philippines one of Chinese tourists' favorite destinations along with Ireland, Singapore, Dubai, and several others.

The dispute with China over territory in the South China Sea does not seem to have affected the country's drawing power among the Chinese either.

In the survey conducted by the Shanghai daily newspaper “Oriental Morning Post”, the Philippines was named one of the "Best Tourist Destinations" together with Ireland, Finland, Singapore, Korea and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

In the aftermath of the Luneta hostage tragedy in August 2010 that ended with the deaths of eight Hong Kong tourists, tourist traffic plunged.

The government's marketing campaign begun early last year, "It's more fun in the Philippines," apparently made many tourists set aside the country's persistent and unresolved safety issues so they could check out what Filipinos were always smiling about.

The rise in tourist traffic from China continued despite tension between the two countries over the Spratly Islands, which nearly led to an armed confrontation between their ships.
