Two US soldiers charged for abusing Afghans

KABUL (Reuters): Two US soldiers serving in Afghanistan have been charged with the abuse of Afghan detainees, the US military said Tuesday. Any suspicion of abuse by US soldiers is likely to further erode public support for international troops, now fighting a war in Afghanistan that has entered its eighth year. "Captain Roger T. Hill and 1st Sergeant Tommy L. Scott, both of 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, have been formally charged with detainee mistreatment and dereliction of the duty to report detainee mistreatment," the US military said in a statement. The soldiers have been charged in an Article 32 investigation, the military equivalent of a civilian grand jury hearing, for an incident that occurred in the east of the country this year, the US military said. Eighteen witnesses testified during the hearing which took place Monday at a US military base in eastern Khost province, it said. In 2005, two US soldiers were charged with abusing Afghan detainees at a base in southern Uruzgan province and some Afghans have claimed they were abused while detained at Bagram, the US army's main base in Afghanistan. The US has around 32,000 troops in Afghanistan, either as part of a NATO-led force or in a separate US-led coalition force. PAN adds: The Police chief of southern Helmand province said five civilians were killed in a blast in Nahr-i-Seraj district on Tuesday afternoon. Colonel Asadullah Sherzad said the blast took place in Waziro Mandi area of the district. He said the explosion took place on a car and killed five civilians. Sherzad said the investigations have been launched but no one has been arrested yet. But Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said the blast took place on a police ranger vehicle and four police were perished. Sayed Muhammad a local resident told Pajhwok Afghan News that he saw the dead bodies wearing civilian clothes and added that there was no police vehicle at the scene. Meanwhile, security forces have rounded up at least 17 people in Saidabad district of Maidan Wardak province for their suspected links with anti-government militants. A press statement released from Maidan Wardak press office said during the clearing operation and based on the tip off joint Afghan and foreign troops launched operations in Milikhel area of Salar located on the main road between the capital Kabul and southern provinces of the country.
