Two Trains Collide in Sri Lanka

Two trains have collided near the Alawwa Railway Station in Kurunegala a short while ago.

The General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways said that the accident occurred when an oncoming train hit a train that was at the station.

He added that over twenty (20) people have been injured and one person has died in the collision. Hospital sources confirmed that around twenty have been admitted to the Alawwa Hospital.

One person has been reported killed and over 20 injured following a collision between two trains in Alawwa. The injured have been admitted to the Alawwa Hospital. According to hospital sources, the seriously injured are being transferred to the Kurunegala Hospital.

Train collision in Sri Lanka could have been averted - Railway trade unions

Sept 21, Colombo: Several trade unions affiliated to the railway sector in Sri Lanka today said the recent train collision in Alawwa could have been prevented if the recommendations made by previous committees on train accidents and derailments.

The train collision in Alawwa last Saturday resulted in the death of five people including a foreign national.

The All Ceylon Railway Workers Union President S. P. Withanage says that the committee appointed to inquire into the collision should hold an impartial inquiry and the transport authorities should ensure that the recommendations of the committee are implemented.

Spokesperson for the Organization for the Protection of the Properties and the Rights of Railway Employees, Sumathipala Manawadu noted that transport authorities who imported power sets and train engines of inferior quality ignoring protests raised by the unions should be held accountable for the collision.

He said the power sets that were imported are made of low quality fiber bodies and not up to the recommended metal content.

According to Manawadu, the transport authorities had imported the Indian S11 power sets despite objections raised by the Railway Department.

Meanwhile, the Railway Technicians Association General Secretary M. A. Ratnasiri pointed out that Rs. 1.7 million each had been spent recently to import of ten M9 engines from France.

However, they were not suitable for use on local railway tracks since the engines were too heavy.

You got to be shittin me, you think train accidents occur due to "bad" brakes? Worn out brake pads is it?

Its obviously signal/communication failure, which is why there were two trains on the same track.

Yep, it can be. But they have mentioned some issue with brakes in these new trains.

No parts in India? Actually these are new trains but some of them failed in the first run too.

so , what's the issue , to reduce the weight you got yo put more fibers on it inplace of matal..
anyway , trains are not meant for colliding excersices..
