New Delhi: Against the backdrop of China
strengthening its capability to airlift soldiers,
India is planning to raise around 1,500 more
airborne troops for deployment in the northeast
along the China border. Under the 12th Defence Plan, India is planning to
raise two new battalions of the airborne troops
with around 1,500 personnel under the elite
Parachute Regiment of the Army, Defence
Ministry sources said here. The new raisings would be apparently used to
check any move by any adversary to airdrop
their troops within Indian territory and capture
that area, they said. The new units would also be used for the
conventional roles in counter terrorism and
counter insurgency operations in that area and
would also be capable of being dropped behind
enemy lines in case of any future war, they said.
Recently, the Army raised the 11 Para (SF) that is being deployed under the Tezpur-based 4 Corps
and 3 Corps in Dimapur which are two of the
Army's main formations looking after the border
with China in the northeast. The Parachute Regiment has 10 units under it of
which eight are Special Forces units while the
rest are Para Commando units with capability of
launching airborne operations. Seven among them have already been trained
and classified as Special Forces, which are
supposed to carry out counter- insurgency
operations during peacetime and sabotage
enemy installations beyond enemy lines during
wars. They are deployed in different sectors of the
country and have also been given the
responsibility to handle 26/11 type attacks near
their area of deployment. China in the recent past has significantly
enhanced its capability to launch airborne
operations and according to some reports, can air
lift more than 3,500 soldiers for operational
deployment in one go.

. . . . .
There is no turning back now. We have to pay the chinese in their own coin. Their only intention to nip our self esteem in the bud.
We miss this chance now, we will be taken for a ride very often in the future. Hope GOI plays its cards right.

The heading is baseless. These are two new airborne battalions to be raised for the parachute regiment. They will NOT be deployed on the borders, whether near china or near any other country. Rather, they will be parachuted into whichever spot they need to be. They will serve as quick reaction forces to counter any surprise incursion, or during war, they will be air dropped behind enemy lines. The "For deployment near China border" is an invention of the reporter.

By the very nature of airborne troops, they won't be deployed in any particular place. They will be based in some location far away from the borders, and flown in when required.

as they are pretending there is no chinese personal in our land... we should capture the intruders...

They are pretending that the land is theirs. So if we capture them, it would be akin to kidnapping their soldiers from their land (in their view).

Anyway that is off topic for this thread, which is about the raising of two new battalions in the parachute regiment, over the course of the 12th five year plan.

Oye teri this is just an expansion of the Para regiments- they're not gonna get stationed in the NE or Ladakh...that's not how they work.

Anyway..with the details of the exchange at the flag meeting being revealed...the recent incursion by Chinese troops is apparently in response to the road we've built to and near DBO..no wonder..they're not happy that the GOI has finally taken cognizance of the ground situation and started the infra development.

We've already restarted quite a few ALGs...this was bound to needle them and now they're needling us and hard.

But its good that we're deploying two strike corps in NE along with an armoured brigade and adding another armored brigade to 14HQ to its already existing one to bring it up to division level strength..If we hadn't started all of this we'd be in the drinks even 10 years from now.
@janon Man you want to try and rectify our mostly brain-dead reporters? A helicopter intrusion takes place in sub-sector in Himachal- they are given the exact distance of the are of intrusion from the DBO intrusion point, nearly 300Km and they print out- "Chinese helicopter intrudes hundreds of km into Indian territory"- based on the distance between the two intrusion points. Lo karlo baat...

The two corps mentioned in the article are not strike corps. Other than the proposed new mountain stike corps, I don't think we will be having any strike corps facing China, or in the north-east.

Regarding the reporting, how irresponsible (not to mention stupid) can they get? I mean, two battalions are being raised in the parachute regiment, and the headline reads "for deployment near china border". I bet that the only reason he put that bit in was because of the ongoing tension regarding the border incursion. But you are right, there is no point ranting about our defence journos. Since so few people in India want to know anything about defence, you cant blame media houses for using their least informed people to report on those matters.

Sorry that should have been 2 mountain divisions and an armored brigade under 1 strike corps in NE...correction for the part you highlighted.
