Approved construction of additional submarines for Egypt

Federal Minister Sigmar Gabriel (SPD) is not a fan of arms exports - which he has in numerous statements made explicit. That is why his visit on Thursday at the shipyard of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems in Kiel, former HDW been eagerly awaited. The company builds exclusively submarines, the council wanted to talk to Gabriel. In the Schleswig-Holstein state capital, Gabriel took about two hours for the interview with the employee representatives, after he visited the submarine "U34" of the German Navy. Then he announced that his ministry has granted the manufacturing authorization for two more submarines for Egypt. The shipyard with 2,500 employees and 350 temporary workers is thus fully booked until the end of 2018.

Export license only possible after completion
Currently in Kiel already two specific for Egypt submarines to be built. They are to be completed by 2017. The approval for the construction did not provide any legal entitlement to subsequent exportation, said a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Economy NDR.de. After completion of the submarines must therefore be sought to export an export license. Nevertheless, even authorizing the construction of the first two submarines for Egypt made in 2012 for political discussions.

Submarine export for Gabriel no problem
The shipbuilding industry and the construction of submarines on the HDW shipyard ThyssenKrupp are an important part of the core technology of Germany, Gabriel said. This industry must be preserved. Arms exports of the yard were, in his view no problem, put Sigmar Gabriel clear. "We have other debates, this is about small arms, which today are the weapons of the civil wars," the minister said. "It's also about tanks, with those in doubt their own population can be suppressed. This all affects not HDW."

Support for Australia deal
Gabriel will also be used for the realization of a U-boat business worth billions with Australia. He asked Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) in November to stand up during their visit to the G20 Summit in Brisbane in the Australian Government for the German offer of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) - "and she has done that too," said Gabriel. He also supported the project. When asked what the chances are, Gabriel said: "When it comes to the quality, the chances are very good."

Less authorized arms exports
2014 were the arms exports significantly. The federal government approved deliveries worth 6.5 billion euros. That is 22 percent less than last year. The export of weapons of war, however, has doubled to 1.8 billion euros. Last summer, Gabriel had reiterated before councils German armaments firms the principle that arms exports in employment policy objectives should not play a decisive role.

Two Type 209 subs are already being built, meaning Egypt's total order has risen to four submarines.

Four obsolete Improved Sino-Romeo Class submarines. Practically useless, all they're really useful for is mine laying and they can fire Harpoons.

Why Egypt not buying scorpion subs from France as they could be good to have in package of Rafael and frigate purchase?

Also why U-209s? When U-212/214 are available.

Ther is no much differences, they putted ther own systems and bigger torpedo tube for ther own cruise missiles. So if egypt have ther own systems they can go for modification. Like the france subs are beyond the germanzz.

. .
what is the difference anyway between the type 209 and the type 214 ?
