TV Journalist Is Arrested as Assaults on Press Freedom Rise in India

Actually, this was expected. With Congress getting toothless and BJP being unreasonably ambitious, Shiv Sena was one of the few remaining major rival who could have got votes in the "BJPised" electoral environment especially in MH, that fall out could have been prevented if Amit Shah stopped being such a narcissist though now BJP and its lapdogs are trying to portray Shiv Sena as some kind of traitors to the "cause", especially among middle class voters, not sure how much effect it is going to have with MH middle class.
BJP is going to **** India six ways to Sunday.

Marathis are quite right wing.

Will they side with BJP or Shiv Sena?

Time will tell but while Marathis are right-wing, there is also Maratha nationalism which despises North Indian migrants and all, and are not likely to tolerate attacks aimed directly at MH though BJP probably understands this and is likely to blame the traitor Thackerys mispresenting the "Noble" Marathas. I am NOT Marathi to tell the actual mood there, just my 2 cents.

Edit : Though one should not forget that it was Marathi Brahmins who founded the RSS.

He has a portrait of Che Guevara on a wall ! This guy claim himself anti-communist!

Arnab was anti-BJP when he was in NDTV.

He became pro-BJP when he joined TimeNow.

So I do not think he is tied to any ideology.

BJP is quite weak in Maharashtra.

BJP cannot win against Shiv Sena in Mumbai/West Maharashtra while BJP cannot win against NCP in Vidarbha/Eastern Maharashtra.

I thoroughly condemn this attack on press freedom and the obvious trumped up charges brought to bear against a member of India's press fraternity. Corruption in the police and judiciary is rife in India and clearly can be exploited to settle an agenda. The autocratic Indian state must be reigned in and democratic principles of press freedom be allowed to flourish. That Hindustan calls itself a democracy is laughable when cases like this come to light.

Freedom for Arnab.
Why exactly has Modi left his main cheerleader hanging out to dry? When the guy who has single-handedly earned Modi's brand of Naziesque majoritarian xenophobic politics airtime and a baying prime time TV audience is thrown humiliatingly under a bus like this, one wonders about Modi's loyalty towards his allies. Republic TV is literally the brainchild spawn of BJP cadres and they are literally unwilling to do anything of substance to defend their man on the frontline.

That would never happen in Pakistan. Whatever side of the political spectrum you're on, people are at least loyal to their established allies. As much as loathe PMLN, I have a limited degree of respect for the fact that they won't ditch each other or throw each other under buses even in their hour of direst need.

I would be shocked if Modi is unable to do anything about this - not necessarily publicly - but at least on the sly. Then again, I've heard that gujratis are so lacking in basic loyalty that they will sell their own mothers if necessary to preserve their status. Maybe Modi will let this poor lackey take the fall and replace him with another dumb shill, of which many must be queuing up.

I see Indians boasting that the Press is 'the fourth pillar of democracy' and yet we have events like these. It's no wonder they treat their minorities they way they do they can just suppress all bad news, if this is what they do to people who support them.

Good for India. This guy is chief architect of making you guys look chutiya,

No one is above the law no matter you are an ordinary citizen, TV anchor or a Journalist. If he has committed a crime, then should be arrested and rightfully punished. From the video it is clearly depicted that he was resisting arrest as well. Calling it a press freedom issue is absurd. Same goes for the Pakistani Journalists as well, who try to cover up their wrongdoing while hiding behind press freedom.

Meanwhile our fellow indian member can enjoy our Atankwandi Arnab:big_boss:

MUMBAI, India — One of India’s most famous television journalists was arrested Wednesday on charges of abetting a suicide, a move criticized by politicians and members of the news media as an attempt to muzzle the press.

The journalist, Arnab Goswami, a conservative news anchor, was arrested by the Mumbai police after a high-voltage drama at his residence in the city, India’s financial capital.

“This is not the way to treat the press,” Prakash Javadekar, India’s information and broadcasting minister, said in a tweet.

Mr. Goswami has made a name for himself shouting down opponents, embracing right-wing causes and aggressively backing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his right-leaning administration.

Many saw the arrest as a vendetta against Mr. Goswami for his criticism of the Mumbai police over a recent homicide investigation, as well as the latest example of an assault on press freedoms in India that has come from many directions.

The twist in this case is that Mumbai, which is part of Maharashtra State, is controlled by an opposition political party. Some commentators said that what the Mumbai authorities were doing was similar to the pressure that the Modi administration has put on progressive journalists elsewhere.

In recent years, Indian news outlets, particularly the television networks, have taken an increasingly conservative turn. Supporters of Mr. Modi and his governing Hindu nationalist party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, often brand critical voices as “anti-nationals,” as though equating patriotism with support for the current government.

The few journalists who question the government’s record on human rights, income inequality, joblessness or, most recently, the handling of the pandemic are often demonized in the right-wing ecosystem.

Early this year, Reporters Without Borders, a Paris-based nonprofit that works to document attacks on journalists, said India had dropped two places on a global press freedom index, to 142nd out of 180 countries. It cited press freedom violations and constant pressure on the media to toe the Hindu nationalist government’s line.

Watch What Happens When Real Housewives Don’t Wear Masks
Mr. Goswami, 47, is no stranger to controversy. Early this year, the Mumbai police opened an investigation into his channel, Republic TV, accusing it of fomenting hatred against Muslims by targeting a mosque outside a railway station, linking it to a nearby protest by migrant workers.

Last month, police officials in Mumbai accused Republic TV and two smaller channels of rigging the ratings system by paying poor people the equivalent of a few dollars a month to tune in to the station and leave their televisions on. Mr. Goswami, a co-founder of the channel, has strongly denied the accusations of bribery, saying that he was being targeted because of coverage critical of the Mumbai police.

The latest case against him pertains to the suicide of an interior designer, Anvay Naik, and his mother in 2018. According to Mr. Naik’s family members, he named the journalist in his suicide note, accusing Mr. Goswami and two others of not paying money that was owed to him.

On Wednesday morning, officials raided Mr. Goswami’s house in an upscale section of south Mumbai, where, according to the police, he and his wife took almost an hour to open the door.

Videos of the raid show Mr. Goswami shouting at the officers, telling them not to manhandle him, as another officer repeatedly requests that Mr. Goswami’s wife, who also works at the TV station, put down her cellphone, which she says is recording the event “live.”

“You have physically assaulted me,” Mr. Goswami says, as an officer repeatedly requests that he cooperate. When he refuses to get up from a couch, another officer steps forward and says, “It is over. You are arrested.”

Akshata Naik, the widow of Anvay Naik, said that her husband had worked hard on a design project for Republic TV, but that not being paid for the work for over a year had left him penniless and forced him to commit suicide.

“We also want justice,” Ms. Naik said. “My husband died because of Arnab Goswami.”

Gurbir Singh, president of the Mumbai Press Club, said that when Mr. Modi’s party was in power in Maharashtra, Mr. Goswami had used his clout to arrange the closing of an investigation into him in connection with Mr. Naik’s suicide.

“There is a suspicion that he was mocking Maharashtra government and its police; that is why he was arrested,” Mr. Singh said. “But he should be given his due rights.”

karma is a bitch ? :-)

A case of assaulting a policeman in duty was also filed against him.

He was resisting trying to get legal help as once he is in jail he knows that he will get 3rd degree treatment.

I do not think he will be able to walk again once he comes out of the jail.
I won't be surprised if he dies in the jail.

Not many people can with stand the 3rd degree treatment.
What is 3rd degree treatment?
Who is shammoo btw?

It is not Pakistan wherein journalist get invisible for few days and returns after a days or sometimes his body...

Here a process being followed by police unlike raw is behind for such cases.

I'm not surprised there are Indians who justify this kind of behavior. It shows how big of a sham wOrLDs BigGest DemOcrAcy really is
