guys in this thread i will try to speculate that can Agni 3 be turned into Agni 5.

its given that Agni 3 can carry weight of 2000 to 2500 Kg.

lets assume it's throw weight is 2000 Kg.

if the payload is reduced range increases.

so if Agni 3's payload is reduced by 500 kg its range will increase by 600 to 700 Km.

DRDO has claimed that it has developed a technology that reduces drag hence range of missile can be increased up to 40%.

Agni 5 has 3rd stage which will increase range by (speculation) by at least 500 Km.

hence applying things above mentioned and with tech used to make missile Cansister capable , Agni 3 can be turned into Agni 5.

NOTE> this thread is result of my speculation.

i have used wiki as source for some facts.

For Agni- 5 range of the missile is not the problem, ISRO can help us out if face any bottlenecks, the real challenge is miniaturization of warheads since Agni 5 is MIRV, which requires significant expertize in electronics.

Changing warhead weight earn a missile a new name.

The trick must be to have the same payload capability at increased ranges. The most obvious solution is the addition of a third cruise stage. You can add throwweight by modifying the RV, and add additional capabilities as the missile chief outlined, e.g. MIRVs. What is taking them time probably different materials for rocket casings - the second Mr. Sarasbat himself declared would be changed, and then the upper stage will probably use new materials and techniques like woven carbon ceramic.

Agni-3 as it is should have a 5000km range. With that tonnage and India's pretty competent level of rocket motor technology, 4000km-4500km are conservative estimates. A third stage should extend that to over 7000km. I'm guessing that 2600km fire at a 350km apogee was a flat trajectory test.

You are looking at a true ICBM in A-5, with one warhead probably with over 12000k range, to bring the US in range.

my speculation of reducing payload by 500 Kg (from supposed 2000 Kg to 1500 Kg ) makes more sense.

because 1500 Kg payload permits Agni 5 to carry a 250 kt warhead along with several decoys

Reducing throw weight makes sense because it is a strategic weapon. If you're going to drop 4400 lbs bombs using these missiles then you need heavy payloads. Physics packages are light.

Agni-3's official payload capacity is 1500 kg and with 500 kg payload it should be able to go atleast 5500 km.


Agni-5 according to some new and reliable sources, is a totally new missile. Let's wait till March first week.

Your strategic payload should weigh much less than 500kg. Should. You don't put your physics packages on display unlike your missiles, so we don't know.

Reducing weight makes sense only if the yield of the warhead is not affected.

Two solutions:

either miniaturize the warhead with the same yield. (make 200kg 15kT warhead to 100 kg with same 15kT yield.)

Or increase the range using high potential fuel or adding an extra stage.
